Sotheby’s originally specialised in selling books and manuscripts. Following the sale of illustrious library collections and first editions, the brand quickly ascended to a position of national acclaim, operating first from the Exeter Exchange on London’s Strand before moving to Bond Street, Mayfair, in 1917.
