A late dinner ashore is a small freedom, but it says much about life at sea. On an itinerary with an overnight call, there is no need to leave the table early because a ship is preparing to depart. The harbour remains outside, the suite awaits on board and the next day begins in the same place. For travellers accustomed to arranging their time, that latitude can matter as much as the destination itself.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection was created around this idea of greater freedom within an operated voyage. Its three purpose-built vessels carry between 298 and 452 guests, considerably fewer than a large resort ship, and all accommodation is in suites with private terraces. The experience does not reproduce private yacht ownership. Instead, it brings together the space and water-level access associated with yachting alongside the staffing, restaurants and forward planning of a hotel.
<h2 id="h.i09pbutm8llj" class="c4">Three Yachts, Two Scales</h2>
Evrima was the first of the collection, setting sail in October 2022. At 190 metres, it accommodates up to 298 guests across 149 suites. Its more intimate scale remains central to its character, while connecting suites allow families and larger parties to travel together without giving up privacy. The two-storey Loft Suites go a step further, placing the living and sleeping areas on separate levels.
Ilma followed in September 2024, with Luminara joining the fleet in July 2025. The two later vessels are substantially larger, each measuring approximately 241 metres and 46,750 gross tonnes. Ilma offers 224 suites for up to 448 guests, while Luminara has 226 for as many as 452. With 374 officers and crew aboard each yacht, the ratio is close to one crew member for every 1.2 guests.
The additional scale can be felt in the breadth of the public rooms, yet privacy remains built into the accommodation. There are no interior cabins; every suite opens onto an ocean-facing terrace, allowing breakfast, an afternoon’s reading or the approach to port to be enjoyed in private. On Ilma and Luminara, the largest upper-suite categories extend to around 100 square metres. Separate living areas and generous terraces make them closer in everyday use to compact apartments than conventional ship accommodation.
Each guest is assigned a Suite Ambassador, who can secure dining and spa reservations, arrange meals in the suite and assist with unpacking or garment pressing. Many of the small arrangements that can interrupt a journey are therefore dealt with before they become the guest’s concern. Here, the quality of service is measured as much by what need not be considered as by what is provided. 
<h2 id="h.bwd7oxes3g3b" class="c4">The Sea Within Reach</h2>
The marina at the stern gives physical form to the collection's yachting premise. When conditions and the anchorage permit, a hydraulic platform opens at water level for swimming and watersports. Paddleboards and kayaks can be launched directly, so the sea is not viewed only from an upper deck.
Ilma and Luminara expand this arrangement with a Marina Terrace and large openings close to the water. Elsewhere, pools, open decks and outdoor dining distribute guests across the yacht rather than drawing everyone into one central atrium. The planning owes more to a resort and private vessel than to the long internal corridors commonly associated with cruising.
That residential quality continues in the design. Helsinki studio Aivan shaped the exteriors of Ilma and Luminara, while AD Associates developed the interiors and DPA was responsible for the lighting. Chapi Chapo Design provided creative direction for Luminara and also contributed to selected spaces aboard Ilma. The suites favour measured proportions, integrated storage and a restrained material palette. 
<h2 id="h.vf3vmqgf0r2a" class="c4">Dining Beyond the Main Room</h2>
Dining is organised around smaller restaurants, each with an identity of its own. On Evrima, S.E.A. was created with Sven Elverfeld, chef of the three-Michelin-starred Aqua at The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg. Ilma introduced Seta su Ilma, a modern Italian restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Fabio Trabocchi, alongside Beach House, whose menu was developed with James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Mina.
Luminara carries these collaborations forward through Seta su Luminara and Beach House, joined by three further restaurants, seven bars and a wine vault. The number of venues matters less than their scale. Smaller dining rooms allow an evening to retain the character and pace of a restaurant rather than drift into banquet service. Meanwhile, 24-hour in-suite dining gives families the freedom to eat privately after a long day ashore.
<h3 id="h.fz62k0nkrckw" class="c6">An Itinerary with Room to Breathe</h3>
Most voyages run for between five and ten nights, with overnight calls and late departures appearing throughout the programme. Mediterranean routes take in familiar yachting ports such as Monte Carlo, Saint-Tropez and Porto Cervo, alongside smaller islands and coastal towns. The collection has since ventured farther afield, with itineraries in Northern Europe, Asia-Pacific and Alaska, followed by French Polynesia in winter 2026–27.
The yachts’ size allows for a broader choice of ports, although arrangements vary and some calls still use regular cruise terminals. The more consistent advantage is time. An overnight stay leaves room for dinner ashore, a performance or an evening with friends, without compressing a destination into a daytime excursion. 
The 2025 collaboration between Sotheby’s and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection showed what that additional time could make possible. A special Luminara voyage from Rome to Barcelona combined days at sea with access to Christian Levett’s collection in Florence, the FAMM museum in Mougins and dinner at La Colombe d’Or, accompanied by Sotheby’s Contemporary Art specialists. It was a one-off experience offered at auction, rather than a standard part of the programme, but it demonstrated how a voyage could be shaped around a collector’s interests.
<h3 id="h.hy7u6cmapxds" class="c6">Charter Without Ownership</h3>
For families, companies or larger parties seeking greater control over the journey, each yacht is also available for full charter. Itineraries, excursions ashore, menus and certain suite arrangements can be adapted accordingly. This comes closest to the freedom of private-yacht travel, without requiring ownership of the vessel or responsibility for its continuing operation.
The distinction should not be reduced to cost alone. Yacht ownership, full charter and an individual suite serve different purposes, while any meaningful financial comparison depends on the vessel’s size and use, as well as crewing, berthing and maintenance. The more useful consideration is the level of commitment involved. Guests may choose a single voyage, return to explore another region or reserve the entire yacht for a family gathering or company occasion, while its operation remains in experienced hands.
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection therefore occupies a space between conventional cruising and private ownership. It offers selected freedoms associated with yachting without asking travellers to manage the vessel behind them. Private terraces, direct access to the marina and a relatively small number of guests all contribute, though the most valuable provision may be time: another night in port, an unhurried morning on deck and fewer reasons to watch the clock.

They are paying the steepest premiums for two things that cannot be manufactured at will: an uninterrupted view and the certainty that no one is watching.

This is not a fleeting preference. Dubai's luxury property market has reached a point where two homes with similar layouts, finishes and even locations can sit millions of dirhams apart in price, with the gap explained almost entirely by one factor that cannot be replicated or expanded: protected views and genuine privacy. It has been noted by industry specialists that buyer priorities in the city have shifted sharply over the past two years towards privacy, wellness and the removal of friction, with turnkey homes increasingly preferred over anything requiring renovation. Waterfront properties in Dubai now trade at a 30 to 60 per cent premium over comparable inland homes, and where a view is genuinely protected from future development, brokers say there is effectively no ceiling on price. Buyers are paying for an unobstructed line of sight across the Gulf, married to architectural restraint that does not compete with the view it is selling. Dubai is now ahead of every other city in the world for ten-million-dollar-plus home sales, with activity at that level matching London and New York combined, a reminder of how concentrated demand has become for waterfront addresses with a genuinely unobstructed outlook.

If the view is the asset that cannot be built, privacy is the asset that cannot be bought back once lost. Wealthy buyers, particularly those whose lives are already visible through business or public profile, increasingly treat discretion as a primary specification rather than a pleasant extra.
The data bears this out. Research conducted by the global headquarters of Sotheby’s International Realty found that wealthy buyers consistently rank privacy and security above amenities or even multigenerational space, and separate industry analysis suggests a meaningful share of ultra-prime transactions now happen off-market entirely, conducted through private networks rather than public listings. This is not simply about avoiding publicity, but about controlling who knows an address exists, who can request a viewing, and who can never set foot past the gate.
Jumeirah Bay Island again offers the clearest illustration. There is one bridge in and out, no through-traffic, no casual visitors. Compare that with Palm Jumeirah, which remains a world-class address but is, by design, a busy one, with hotels, beach clubs and a monorail running through it. Buyers who want the Palm's pedigree without its footfall increasingly look towards the Bay, or towards newer low-density concepts such as Amali Island, structured as an invitation-only community rather than an open development. The willingness to forgo a larger pool of potential buyers at resale, in exchange for guaranteed seclusion today, tells its own story about where priorities now sit.

None of this makes square footage irrelevant. Where a buyer can comfortably afford either an enormous house with a compromised outlook or a smaller one with an irreplaceable view, the latter is increasingly winning.

For advisers and agents, the lesson is one of positioning rather than persuasion. The buyers driving this market already understand the value of discretion; they do not need convincing of it. What they are evaluating is whether a given address can actually deliver it, structurally and permanently, not merely promise it in a brochure. In a market where almost anything can be built, the genuinely luxurious asset is the one that cannot be.

Buccellati: The Italian Maison That Turns Gold into Lace

A Buccellati jewel rarely gives everything away at first glance. What appears to be softly brushed gold reveals, on closer inspection, fine lines cut individually and by hand. A broad bracelet has the delicacy of lace; a ring may recall the tracery of a rose window. Diamonds and coloured stones are sometimes used in abundance, but the metal itself remains central to the design.

This treatment of gold has defined the Milanese maison for more than a century. Founded by Mario Buccellati in 1919, the house draws on Renaissance goldsmithing, Venetian textiles, Italian architecture and the natural world. Its jewels are recognisable through their engraving, openwork and subtle use of yellow and white gold, rather than a single recurring emblem. These qualities also shape how Buccellati is regarded at auction. Carat weight is only part of the assessment; workmanship, date, design and condition all matter, as does a piece’s place within the history of the family-founded house.

<h2 id="h.7r4mgvg85jca" class="c4">The House Beyond Milan</h2>
In 1919, Mario Buccellati took over Beltrami and Besnati, the goldsmiths with whom he had served his apprenticeship, and opened his first shop at Via Santa Margherita 5, between La Scala and the Galleria. His grounding in historic Italian goldsmithing, together with his interest in Renaissance ornament and antique metalwork, shaped the house from the beginning.
A chance meeting outside the shop in 1922 began Mario’s friendship with the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio. The maison’s archive preserves 83 letters exchanged between them from 1922 to 1936, recording commissions for cigarette cases, engraved boxes and other gifts. In 1936, d’Annunzio called Mario the ‘Prince of Goldsmiths’ – a name that has followed him ever since.
The business crossed the Atlantic in 1951, when Buccellati opened its first New York shop on 51st Street. After Mario’s death in 1965, his sons continued the work, with Gianmaria overseeing design and the workshops while Luca developed the American business. Paris followed in 1979, when Buccellati became the first Italian jewellery house to open a boutique on Place Vendôme.
Richemont acquired Buccellati in 2019, although the family remains closely involved. Andrea Buccellati and his daughter Lucrezia represent the third and fourth generations of its creative history, connecting present-day collections with the drawings, techniques and workshop knowledge developed by their predecessors.

<h2 id="h.juzk5g1ye6z0" class="c4">The Goldsmith’s Vocabulary</h2>
At the workbench, Buccellati’s distinctive finish begins with a rather modest instrument. The burin, a small engraving tool used since the Renaissance, is guided across the gold by hand, one incision following another. Direction and depth matter. Alter either, and the light changes with it.
Perhaps the most recognisable result is rigato. Its fine parallel lines soften the hard reflection of polished gold, leaving a surface with the lustre of silk. The technique is closely associated with the Macri collection, where broad expanses of engraved metal are interrupted by brilliant-cut diamonds in tiny star-shaped rosettes and, on some pieces, polished gold beads. Against the matt ground, these details appear particularly bright.
Change the pattern of the cuts and the character of the metal changes too. In telato, lines cross at right angles, giving gold the grain of linen or an artist’s canvas. Segrinato&nbsp;is denser, built from closely worked marks that overlap in several directions. Buccellati often uses it for leaves, petals and shells, where an evenly polished surface would lose the subtle irregularities found in nature.
Ornato&nbsp;is more elaborate. Floral motifs are engraved over a rigato&nbsp;ground, with the burin moving through patterns drawn from Renaissance brocade, damask and lace. Matt and polished passages sit beside one another, creating depth without relying on larger stones.

A finished Tulle jewel can look as though the gold has been woven. The process begins, however, with a solid sheet of metal. Once the design has been traced, the openings are drilled and cut with a fine handsaw to form a mesh of tiny polygonal cells. Each cell must be reworked with the handsaw at least five times before the surface is ready for engraved ornament and gemstones. It is painstaking work, despite the apparent lightness of the result.
Tulle was part of Buccellati’s repertoire from the maison’s earliest years. When Sotheby’s marked Buccellati’s centenary in Paris in 2019, the accompanying non-selling exhibition included two pieces made by Mario during the 1920s. The Mirta&nbsp;Tulle bracelet resembles a narrow ribbon of pierced gold, while the Clotilde&nbsp;tiara uses the same lace-like openwork on a more formal scale, set with natural pearls and diamonds. Neither was an auction lot; both came from the Buccellati family’s private collection.
Seen together, they place the technique within the house’s first decade. Later forms include tulle raggiera, in which elongated openings spread from a central stone like the tracery of a rose window. The pattern changed, but the demanding work of removing the gold cell by cell remained.

<h2 id="h.jd8lnc42cbas" class="c4">Macri and the Modern Cuff</h2>
After the pierced intricacy of Tulle, a Macri cuff looks almost spare. Gianmaria Buccellati named the collection for his daughter Maria Cristina, shortening her name to Macri. Across its broad gold surface, fine rigato&nbsp;lines soften the reflection, while brilliant-cut diamonds sit in tiny star-shaped rosettes. Some versions add polished beads against the matt engraving.
With no dominant centre stone, proportion and workmanship carry the design. The cuff has sufficient scale for evening, yet its clean outline also works with daytime tailoring.
Movement enters the picture with Hawaii, created by Mario in the 1930s and later expanded by Andrea. Small circles of hand-twisted gold are linked into supple strands, allowing earrings and long necklaces to shift with the wearer. Where Macri holds light across a broad engraved surface, Hawaii catches it at the edges, in motion.

<h2 id="h.q1k5kbcc4l4k" class="c4">Gianmaria at Auction</h2>
On 29 October 2019, during Buccellati’s centenary year, Sotheby’s Paris offered 26 Buccellati lots, accompanied by a non-selling exhibition of 16 historic pieces. The sale showed how Gianmaria retained Mario’s engraving techniques while introducing stronger colour and more sculptural settings.
One of the most revealing lots was the 1992 Gran Mogol&nbsp;necklace. Seven heart-shaped aquamarines totalling 27.61 carats were framed by textured gold pavé-set with 602 rubies weighing 14.56 carats, and linked by cabochon emeralds. Gianmaria drew on the jewellery of the Mughal courts, bringing its saturated colour into a setting worked with Renaissance-derived patterns. Estimated at €16,000–€24,000, the necklace realised €52,500. The result cannot be read through carat weight alone; design and workmanship are integral to the necklace’s auction value.
The Jacqueline&nbsp;demi-parure, completed in 1988 and 1990, offered another view of his method. Amethysts and citrines sat among grapevine leaves worked in segrinato&nbsp;and rigato, with a pear-shaped citrine of 35.66 carats forming the necklace’s principal drop. A reproduction of the original drawing accompanied the lot – a useful link between the finished jewel and Gianmaria’s design process.
His range extended beyond coloured-stone necklaces. The 1988 Charleston&nbsp;necklace revisited the tasselled seed-pearl styles of the 1920s, while the 1999 Confetto&nbsp;powder box placed diamond-centred ornato&nbsp;stars against a finely cross-hatched telato&nbsp;ground.

Buccellati’s hand-worked surfaces make condition particularly important. Engraving should remain crisp, openwork intact and articulated links fluid. Heavy polishing can soften the incised lines, while repairs to a Tulle mesh require close examination.
Date and authorship matter too. A signature is useful but cannot establish attribution by itself, since hallmarks can be copied and collection names are sometimes assigned too readily. Workmanship and marks should be considered together, supported where possible by numbering, original drawings, fitted cases and provenance.
Comparisons should therefore be made between genuinely similar pieces, taking account of maker, period, rarity, scale and condition. The finest Buccellati jewels reward close inspection because the workmanship remains visible in the gold itself – in every engraved line, pierced cell and articulated link.

Rare whisky did not become valuable by accident. Across Scotland, Japan, Ireland and the United States, old distilling traditions have lived through war, prohibition, closures, trade pressures and changing tastes. Some houses survived intact; others left behind only a small stock of casks and a name collectors still recognise. In recent years, collecting has come back in full swing, with established distilleries drawing extraordinary prices and newer names adding a more particular edge to the luxury spirits market.

The strongest prices tend to appear when a respected distillery, a small outturn, sound condition and original presentation all come together. Sotheby’s has helped give this market a sharper public shape. Since launching spirits as a dedicated category in 2019, the auction house has become one of the leading names in rare whisky sales and holds the record for the most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold at auction. Its 2025 Wine &amp; Spirits report also shows how far the category has travelled, with spirits accounting for 20 per cent of its auction market share that year.

<h2>1. The Macallan: 1926 – Valerio Adami (US$2.71 million)</h2>
The Macallan 1926 Valerio Adami remains the clearest benchmark in rare whisky. Filled in 1926, aged for 60 years and bottled in 1986, it came from a cask that has become the Holy Grail for Scotch collectors. Only 40 bottles were produced, with 12 carrying labels by Italian artist Valerio Adami, giving an already rare whisky a well-cut artistic identity.
In November 2023, Sotheby’s London sold the bottle for £2,187,500, setting a world auction record for whisky. Reconditioned by The Macallan Distillery before sale, with work to the capsule, cork and label, it had the provenance collectors look for when a bottle reaches this rarefied level.

<h2>2. The Emerald Isle Collection: Craft Irish Whiskey&nbsp;Co. x Fabergé (US$2.8 million)</h2>
With Irish whiskey pushing further into the rarefied end of collecting, The Emerald Isle Collection is a rather particular case. It is not a straight single-bottle record, but a luxury whiskey set created by The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. with Fabergé. The release centres on a 30-year-old Irish single malt, presented with Fabergé pieces, including a Celtic Egg and a timepiece, alongside a hand-crafted decanter.
Fabergé records a US$2.8 million sale to American collector Mike Daley in 2024. The figure makes sense only when the full object is considered. This is whiskey treated as a commissioned possession, with the drink, the jewellery work and the presentation all carrying the value.

<h2>3. The Macallan: 1926 – Fine &amp; Rare (US$1.9 million)</h2>
Before the Adami-labelled bottle reset the market, this was the bottle setting the pace. In 2019, Sotheby’s sold The Macallan 1926 Fine &amp; Rare for around US$1.9 million, then a record for any bottle of wine or spirit.
Its value is quieter than the artist-label editions, but no less serious. The Fine &amp; Rare label carries the weight of The Macallan’s archive, with the same 1926 cask, 60-year maturation and tightly limited release behind it. For collectors, its restraint is part of the point. It is scarce, properly documented and tied to the cask that still sets the tone for whisky prices at the very top.

<h2>4. Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt Card Series (around US$1.52 million)</h2>
A full deck, in this case, is the point. Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt Card Series is not a single-bottle record but a complete-series record, with a 54-bottle set reported at around US$1.52 million. The bottles came from the remaining stock of Hanyu, the closed Japanese distillery whose casks were later preserved and released by Ichiro Akuto.
Each bottle carries a playing-card label, giving the collection a sharply drawn identity as well as serious whisky value. One bottle is rare enough; assembling the full series is another matter altogether. That completeness, hard-won and increasingly unlikely to repeat, is what gives the set its particular weight.

<h2>5. Yamazaki 55 (approaching US$800,000)</h2>
By the time Yamazaki 55 reached the market, Japanese whisky had already earned serious collector attention. This bottle simply confirmed the point. Sotheby’s describes it as the most valuable Japanese whisky ever released, with prices approaching US$800,000.
Released by Suntory in very limited numbers, Yamazaki 55 carries the authority of Japan’s oldest malt whisky house and the patience of long ageing. It is a measured release, built on age, scarcity and the quiet confidence of a name collectors already know well. For many buyers, it marks a turning point for Japanese whisky, proving that its rarest bottles can stand beside the great Scottish malts on price, pedigree and collector demand.

<h2>6. The Macallan Red Collection (US$975,756)</h2>
As a set record, The Macallan Red Collection sits in a slightly different corner of the market. Sotheby’s sold the bespoke complete set in 2020 for £756,400, with proceeds supporting City Harvest London.
The collection brought together some of The Macallan’s oldest age statements, from 40 to 78 years old, presented as a complete and finely worked release rather than a single standout bottle. That is where its value lies. It carries age, rarity and charity provenance, but also the satisfaction of a full run, neatly held together under one of Scotch whisky’s most closely followed names.

<h2>7. The Macallan 64 in Lalique (US$460,000)</h2>
Long before whisky prices reached today’s multi-million-dollar level, The Macallan 64 in Lalique gave the market an early sign of how rare Scotch could be treated by collectors. Sold for US$460,000 in 2010, it paired 64-year-old Macallan and a one-of-a-kind Lalique crystal decanter, while the proceeds went to a clean-water charity.
That figure now sits well below the later records achieved by bottles from The Macallan’s 1926 cask, including Fine &amp; Rare in 2019 and Valerio Adami in 2023. Even so, its place is secure. It was an early collector milestone, showing that age, presentation and provenance could take rare whisky well beyond the drinks cabinet.

<h2>8. Old Rip Van Winkle “Sam’s” (US$162,500)</h2>
Among American whiskeys, this bottle earns its place for a different reason. Old Rip Van Winkle 20 Year Old Single Barrel “Sam’s” is a category record, not a rival to the highest Macallan prices. Sotheby’s presented it within The Great American Whiskey Collection, and the achieved price was later reported at US$162,500.
The interest lies as much in bourbon culture as in scarcity. Linked to Stitzel-Weller and bottled for Sam’s, it carries the sort of provenance collectors take seriously, especially in a field where small details can matter greatly. Van Winkle has become one of the defining names in rare American whiskey, and this bottle sits neatly within that story.
