James von Klemperer’s name may not be as widely known outside architecture as the buildings he has helped shape, but his work includes some of the most ambitious urban projects of recent decades. As President and Principal of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, better known as KPF, his career has moved between individual towers and the planning of entire districts, with major hotel and civic commissions in between. Across these different scales, von Klemperer returns to the way large buildings relate to their surroundings and the people who use them. At Atlantis The Royal in Dubai, that approach takes a distinctive form. 

Set on Palm Jumeirah, Atlantis The Royal was designed by KPF, with von Klemperer and Elie Gamburg credited as lead architects. Instead of a conventional single tower, the resort is arranged as a stepped composition of offset blocks. This fragmented massing opens the building to light and views, creating sky courts and terraces, while a sky bridge connects the hotel and residential towers high above the ground. 
For all the engineering behind it, the organising principle is straightforward. The hotel and residences are divided among offset blocks, while the spaces between them become terraces, gardens, pools and shaded courts. This carries the indoor-outdoor life of a beachside villa high above the water and allows the resort to unfold through a sequence of distinct spaces.

<h2 id="h.30c766mmkqmy" class="c4">A Career Shaped by Cities and Detail</h2>
Architecture came last in von Klemperer’s formal education. He studied History and Literature at Harvard, completed a Master of Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge, and later earned his Master of Architecture from Princeton. His work at KPF has since ranged from planning entire districts to considering the finish of an individual façade.
That breadth has proved particularly useful on complicated commissions. Von Klemperer is concerned with how the different parts of a building are ordered and joined, especially when several uses must coexist within one development.
His attention also extends to materials. At 64 University Place in Greenwich Village, deeply recessed arches of hand-set brick give the façade depth and weight. Cast-bronze screens serve a different purpose at the Blue Pool Road townhouses in Hong Kong, bringing privacy to the interiors without closing them off. That ability to move between overall organisation and close detail became especially relevant at Atlantis The Royal, where hotel, residential and leisure spaces had to remain distinct while still belonging to a coherent whole.

<h2 id="h.d9nj8cp7e11t" class="c4">Atlantis The Royal — Dubai</h2>
Opened in 2023, Atlantis The Royal occupies a long, narrow site on <a href="https://sothebysrealty.ae/community-guides/dubai/palm-jumeirah/" rel="noopener">Palm Jumeirah</a>. The 193,600-square-metre development contains 795 hotel rooms and 231 residences, yet its scale is not expressed through a single monumental tower. KPF separated the hotel and residential elements above a shared base, arranging them as stepped, offset blocks joined by a sky bridge. The openings admit light and views, while dividing the resort into spaces encountered gradually.
Twenty sky terraces and fourteen sky courts carry pools, gardens and shaded outdoor areas through the height of the building. Coastal winds pass between the blocks, and villas gain private or semi-private terraces high above the Gulf. This vertical arrangement is the project’s most distinctive move. The beach and principal pool are no longer the sole focus of outdoor life; the resort continues upwards, with each level offering another place to pause, swim or look back towards Dubai.
Water also guided GA Design’s work on the public areas and guestrooms. In the lobby, the 11.5-metre Droplets sculpture, made from 5.5 tonnes of stainless steel, represents the first drop of rain in the desert. Behind the visible drama lies demanding engineering. The 1,350-tonne Main Skybridge spans more than 105 metres between the towers, while wind testing, corrosion protection and bespoke piling respond to the exposed marine site. WSP also records that the project attained LEED certification, with material use reduced to limit embodied carbon. Together, these measures support the cantilevers, pools and terraces that give the resort its layered form.

Recognition began well before the resort opened. The design received an American Architecture Award in 2018, five years before Atlantis The Royal welcomed its first guests. Once completed, it was named Hotel of the Year and New Build Hotel at the 2023 AHEAD Awards, which also honoured its landscaping and outdoor spaces. The Architecture MasterPrize recognised it in the Hospitality Architecture category, while CTBUH named it the best tall building in the Middle East and Africa. ENR’s Best Residential/Hospitality Project award acknowledged the construction and engineering behind it. In 2025, the resort received the MICHELIN Architecture &amp; Design Award.
The sequence is telling. The earliest award responded to an ambitious architectural proposal; those that followed considered how successfully it had been carried through. The original decision to divide the resort among blocks, bridges, terraces and courts survived the considerable demands of construction and became central to the finished hotel.

<h4 id="h.f2nbc0jgwuso" class="c9">One Vanderbilt, New York</h4>
One Vanderbilt rises 427 metres in East Midtown, one of Manhattan’s principal business districts. It stands beside Grand Central Terminal, New York’s historic commuter rail hub, on a site shaped as much by commuters and pedestrians as by those who work in the tower.
In von Klemperer’s design, four tapering volumes form the tower, while angled cuts at street level reveal the terminal’s cornice, restoring a view obscured for almost a century. Below ground, the building connects directly to the transport network. Outside, part of Vanderbilt Avenue has become a pedestrian plaza. The offices, station and surrounding streets are brought together through one carefully ordered arrival. This reflects his wider approach to urban scale, resolving the complexity of a major tower through the way people enter and move through it.
<h4 id="h.kulimgkwnji4" class="c9">One Nine Elms, London</h4>
On the south bank of the Thames between Battersea and Vauxhall, former industrial land at Nine Elms has been redeveloped as a residential and commercial quarter. One Nine Elms forms part of this wider change, combining the Park Hyatt London River Thames, apartments and private residences across two towers.
KPF divided these uses between the 56-storey City Tower and 42-storey River Tower, connecting the buildings with a bridge at first-floor level. Winter gardens extend the living spaces, while the towers are angled to preserve views across the surrounding development.
The comparison with Atlantis The Royal is especially close. Both projects reflect von Klemperer’s approach to mixed-use architecture, keeping hospitality and private living distinct while reconnecting them through bridges, shared amenities and outdoor spaces.
<h4 id="h.apu5e2j5owyh" class="c9">Jing An Kerry Centre, Shanghai</h4>
Jing An Kerry Centre occupies an entire block on West Nanjing Road, yet a house where Mao Zedong lived in the 1920s has been preserved on the site. The historic residence now stands within a mixed-use development of offices, shops, a 508-room hotel and an events centre in central Shanghai’s Jing’an district. 
KPF placed much of the development’s organisation between the buildings. Open-air shopping routes continue the scale and movement of the surrounding streets, while gardens divide the development at ground level. Here, von Klemperer’s concern with architectural order extends across an entire city block, where streets and gardens organise the development’s different uses. At Atlantis The Royal, the same principle is applied vertically through terraces and sky courts.

Atlantis The Royal may be visible from across the Palm, but von Klemperer’s approach is easier to appreciate from within. The routes linking the hotel and residences, together with the shaded sky courts and terraces above the Gulf, give the building a sense of order despite its scale. Settings and uses vary across his international work, yet the same practical concern remains in how people move through a building and make use of it.

Fernando Donis, the Architect Who Framed Dubai

Long before it became one of Dubai’s most recognisable landmarks, the Dubai Frame was a competition idea by Fernando Donis. The proposal was disarmingly simple. Instead of adding another tower to a skyline already crowded with them, it offered a frame through which old and new Dubai could be seen.

That clarity has kept Donis’s name closely tied to the city, although his career reaches well beyond the emirate. Born in La Paz, Baja California Sur, he studied at the Architectural Association in London, completed a PhD in architecture at TU Delft, and spent nine years as an associate of Rem Koolhaas at OMA, according to his studio biography.
His practice, DONIS, works across architecture, urbanism, research, industrial design and art. It is a broad field, though the work most closely associated with him has a quieter discipline with a small number of public projects and proposals, each built around a strong central idea.

<h2>The Making of Fernando Donis</h2>
By the time Fernando Donis set up his own practice, he had already passed through two very different kinds of architectural training. The Architectural Association in London gave him exposure to a more experimental culture. TU Delft, where he completed a PhD, gave the work a research footing. That combination helps explain the spare quality often associated with his projects. 
Before DONIS, there was OMA. Donis worked with Rem Koolhaas during a period that brought him into contact with large, complex projects, including Renaissance Tower and the Porsche towers in Dubai, CCTV Headquarters in Beijing and Jeddah International Airport in Saudi Arabia. He later left OMA around the time of the 2008 financial crisis, pursued doctoral work and founded his own office. 
Those years gave Donis a working knowledge of buildings expected to carry public weight. OMA’s projects were large, complex and closely tied to the cities around them. His own work later took a more spare route, with the Dubai Frame and London Gate showing how much can rest on a single, legible architectural move. 
His career has not followed the usual route of the prolific commercial architect. There is no long roll-call of towers carrying his name. Instead, his reputation rests on a smaller number of sharply drawn projects, many of them linked to competitions and civic briefs, where the first idea has to be strong enough to carry the scheme. 
<h2 id="h.9613zrc4sxz" class="c5">Dubai Frame - Dubai</h2>
The Dubai Frame remains the project most closely associated with Fernando Donis. It began as his winning proposal for the 2009 ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award, held with Dubai Municipality, where the scheme was selected from 926 entries. The idea was simple, but not slight. Instead of trying to outdo the skyline, the frame made Dubai itself the view.
Located in Zabeel Park, the completed Dubai Frame looks in two directions. One side faces the older parts of Dubai, while the other opens towards the towers and newer districts associated with the city’s recent growth. Its gold-coloured exterior pattern draws on the Expo 2020 logo.
Donis is most accurately described as the architect of the competition-winning Dubai Frame proposal. The completed landmark involved later delivery beyond that original competition stage, but the central idea remains closely tied to him. It is still the clearest example of his architectural instinct. 
<h2 id="h.z1qk29s5rw23" class="c5">London Gate - London</h2>
In 2010, Donis won the competition for A New Landmark for Aldgate, a temporary gateway planned in connection with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was one of the early projects of his independent office, and it placed his work in a very different civic setting from Dubai.
Aldgate has long been one of London’s points of entry. That history gives the idea of a gate a certain weight, even before anything is built. Donis drew on that older meaning in a contemporary way, using a familiar architectural form to mark arrival, passage and the edge of the city.
Conceived in the run-up to London 2012, the project belonged to a particular civic moment. It was less a permanent monument than a temporary marker for Aldgate, an old point of arrival in a city preparing for a global audience.

<h2 id="h.8n6pv1uxejd1" class="c5">CCTV Headquarters and the OMA Years</h2>
Large architecture offices rarely leave a clean one-name trail, and OMA is no exception. During his years there, Donis worked within an office handling major international briefs, from CCTV Headquarters in Beijing to Jeddah International Airport, Renaissance Tower and the Porsche towers in Dubai. These projects belong to the wider OMA chapter of his career, but they show the scale of work around him before he founded DONIS.
Among them, CCTV Headquarters remains the most recognisable. Completed in Beijing between 2002 and 2012, it was conceived as an alternative to the standard skyscraper, with a continuous form that joins two leaning towers into a single structure. The building culminates in a 75-metre cantilever and contains about 500,000 square metres of programme.
<h2 id="h.konhaspk61zt" class="c3 c10">Final Thoughts</h2>
By the time Donis established his own practice, the scale of the commissions had changed, but the ambition had not. OMA had given him experience of architecture at its most complex; independent practice allowed him to concentrate that experience into fewer, more precisely defined ideas. The Dubai Frame remains the fullest expression of that shift. Its importance lies in turning Dubai’s transformation –the older districts on one side, the newer skyline on the other – into the subject of the architecture.

Roman Vnoukov’s career has taken shape in the more private rooms of architecture and design, including residences, boutiques, restaurants and branded interiors made for clients with a clear sense of what they want to project. His public record does not follow the usual architectural path of competitions, civic buildings and museum retrospectives. It belongs instead to a more client-led world, where design has to carry identity with discipline, from a Manhattan jewellery house to a branded residential tower in Dubai.
Born in Belarus, Vnoukov is the founder and principal of Design Studio Romani, his New York-based architecture and interior design practice, through which he has worked across private homes, restaurants, offices and boutiques. The available record places his early career in the post-Soviet sphere, including restoration work in a historic district of Minsk, before his professional life moved towards the United States and a wider international clientele.
Across the better-documented projects, Vnoukov appears less interested in decoration as an afterthought than in complete rooms, carefully worked through, with materials, lighting, display, circulation and detail considered together. His most visible professional relationship has been with Jacob Arabo and Jacob &amp; Co., a collaboration that has moved from boutique interiors to branded residential architecture in Dubai.

Before Roman Vnoukov’s career became attached to jewellery boutiques, private residences and branded interiors, there was a practical foundation in making. Vnoukov’s route into design appears to have begun close to the building site, with practical training in trades such as plumbing and stone masonry before his work moved more fully into architecture and interiors. That early contact with craft gives useful context to the later work. Vnoukov’s most visible projects are not interiors in the thin sense of decoration added to a completed shell. They are built from a closer understanding of how rooms are put together, how surfaces meet, how light falls, and how material can give a space its weight.
Stone, metal, glass, joinery and lighting are not treated as afterthoughts in Vnoukov’s work. They do much of the organising, giving the room its weight, pace and sense of order. At his best, there is a careful join between the built detail and the act of display, so the interior feels properly made rather than simply arranged.
That practical sensibility becomes clearer when seen against the projects that brought his work into public view, particularly the Jacob &amp; Co. flagship in Manhattan, reopened after a major redesign in 2018.

On East 57th Street in Manhattan, Jacob &amp; Co.’s flagship boutique and corporate headquarters gave Vnoukov a highly specific brief. The store had been closed for renovation from June 2017 before reopening in April 2018. Industry coverage places Jacob Arabo closely alongside Vnoukov on the project, with Design Studio Romani named as the architecture and design lead.
The commission is important because <a href="https://sothebysrealty.ae/the-journal/jacob-and-co/" rel="noopener">Jacob &amp; Co.</a> already had a strong visual identity before the redesign began. Its jewellery and watches are known for faceted stones, mechanical complexity and gem-set detail. Vnoukov’s task was not to create a polite luxury backdrop. It was to make a setting that could hold those objects with clarity, proportion and care. 
The design drew from the brand’s own forms. Geometric patterns echoed the facets of jewellery and timepieces, while details linked to the Astronomia collection appeared in the ceiling, façade and central display areas. The watch references were visible in the geometry and detailing, but handled with enough restraint to keep the boutique from feeling like a literal reproduction of the timepiece.

Developed by Binghatti in partnership with Jacob &amp; Co., the tower takes his long working relationship with Jacob Arabo into a residential setting of far greater scale.
The project brings together developer, brand and designer, with Vnoukov responsible for the architectural and interior design under Arabo’s creative direction. It is an important distinction, because the tower belongs as much to Jacob &amp; Co.’s world of jewellery and watchmaking as it does to <a href="https://sothebysrealty.ae/lifestyles/branded-residences/" rel="noopener">Dubai’s branded residence</a> market.
That connection is carried through the naming of the homes, from Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby villas to the Astronomia and Billionaire sky penthouses. The references are drawn from gemstones and Jacob &amp; Co. collections, giving the project a more specific identity than the usual hotel-led branded residence.
There is also a clear link with the Manhattan flagship. In New York, Vnoukov worked with jewellery and watchmaking cues inside a boutique. In Dubai, those same ideas were applied to a high-rise residential address, with Business Bay giving the project its urban setting.
The wider Gulf connection remains tied to Jacob &amp; Co.’s regional presence, including boutiques in Dubai and Riyadh. Still, Burj Binghatti Jacob &amp; Co. Residences gives Vnoukov’s work in the region its most visible architectural form.

Caviar Bar at Resorts World Las Vegas, now known as AQUA, shows Vnoukov working at a more intimate hospitality scale. Opened in December 2021 as chef Shaun Hergatt’s first south-western venture, the restaurant and bar was designed by Roman Vnoukov. Its details were closely tied to the idea of caviar, from Belarus crystal-embellished doors to a stingray-clad bar and hand-blown crystal ceiling elements. The room did not rely on broad luxury signals. It took one small, specific subject and gave it texture, craft and a sense of occasion suited to Las Vegas dining.

Vnoukov’s work received a formal public setting in 2018, when Roman Vnoukov. The Retrospective: Architecture, Design, Photography&nbsp;was shown at the National Arts Club’s Gregg Gallery in New York. Presented with the Russian American Foundation as part of the 16th Annual Russian Heritage Month, the exhibition placed his architecture, interiors and photography within a broader cultural frame. The same year, a New York State Senate resolution named him among figures recognised for their contribution to New York and the United States. Alongside these acknowledgements, Design Studio Romani was described as having created almost 400 interiors across private and commercial spaces in the United States, Europe and the Arab Emirates, with references to private residences at The Plaza and Time Warner Building, work at The Setai in Miami, and luxury private villages in Europe, Russia and Ukraine.

Adrian Smith is often introduced through the modern supertall tower. That is understandable, but it is not the whole story. Over a career spanning more than five decades, the Chicago-born architect has worked on towers, hotels and civic schemes that test how very large buildings should take their place in a city. Burj Khalifa in Dubai remains his best-known commission, not least because of its height, but it sits within a wider body of work that includes Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai, Central Park Tower in New York, FKI Tower in Seoul, Waldorf Astoria Beijing, Al Wasl Plaza in Dubai and the still-unfinished Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia.
The point, with Smith, is not simply that he builds high. His career is more interesting when looked at in the round: as a study in proportion, structure and the public presence of large buildings. His towers are often governed by clear architectural judgement – in the way they rise from the street, take the light, answer the climate and, most crucially, still feel at home within the city.

Adrian Smith was born in Chicago in 1944, in a city with architecture very much in its bones. Its confidence, from the great commercial towers to the discipline of its streets, would become a quiet but lasting influence on his working life. He first studied architecture at Texas A&amp;M University before completing his Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1969.
By then, Smith had already joined Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill, better known as SOM, one of the most influential American architecture firms of the modern era. He entered the practice in 1967 and, over the following decades, built much of his early reputation there. In 1980, he became a Design Partner in SOM’s Chicago office. He later served as the firm’s chief executive from 1992 to 1995 and remained a Consulting Design Partner until 2006.
Those years at SOM were, in many ways, his apprenticeship in large-scale architecture. The practice brought architecture, engineering and city planning into close conversation, and Smith’s later work bears that out. His major buildings are seldom stand-alone objects. More often, they belong to a district, a commercial brief or a piece of city-making, where the building has to earn its place rather than simply occupy a site.
In 2006, Smith founded Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture with Gordon Gill and Robert Forest. Based in Chicago, the practice – usually known as AS+GG – continued his long interest in tall buildings, while giving greater weight to energy use, climate and performance. It was not a break with the past, but a new chapter: same eye for scale, sharper attention to what a building asks of its setting.

Burj Khalifa remains the building most closely associated with Adrian Smith. Designed while he was at SOM, the tower opened in 2010 for Emaar Properties and rises to 828 metres, with more than 160 storeys. It is one of the clearest examples of how architectural form and structural engineering can work together – no small feat at this height.
The tower’s plan is based on a triple-lobed form, often linked to the Hymenocallis flower. Its structure uses a buttressed core, with three wings arranged around a central hexagonal core. As the building rises, the setbacks reduce its mass and help manage wind forces, while giving Burj Khalifa its familiar stepped profile.
What is striking about the building is how height never feels accidental. The tapering form gives it a measured ascent, reflecting Smith’s long interest in proportion. The project also includes practical environmental measures, including a condensation collection system that reuses water for irrigation. In Dubai’s hot and humid climate, that detail is more than a technical aside. It shows the hard graft behind designing at this scale, where even the most celebrated building still has to work properly day to day.

Completed in 1999, while Smith was still at SOM, Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai became one of the defining skyscrapers of late twentieth-century China. Its design draws on Chinese architectural references, particularly the rhythm and vertical layering associated with pagoda forms, but it never turns that influence into a literal copy.
The tower rises in clear steps, which helps give its height a sense of order. It feels strong and carefully balanced, rather than heavy or overdone. In Pudong, it became part of a new architectural language for a district where finance and international commerce were beginning to give Shanghai a sharper global presence.
Jin Mao Tower also shows how Smith worked local references into the building itself, so the connection feels built-in rather than added on. The cultural connection is handled with restraint, giving the building a sense of place without feeling heavy-handed.

Central Park Tower in New York, completed in 2020, belongs to a very different kind of city setting. At 1,550 feet, it is one of the tallest residential buildings in the world, yet its design is shaped as much by Manhattan’s limits as by its height.
The building sits on Billionaires’ Row, where narrow plots, valuable air rights and protected views have led to a new generation of slender residential towers. Here, planning has to be exact. The structure, core and apartments must all be carefully arranged to make the most of views, protect usable space and respond to the tight grain of the city around them.
Central Park Tower places particular emphasis on corner residences and wide views over Central Park and Manhattan. Its form is not soft in the manner of Burj Khalifa. It is sharper and more exacting, shaped by site value, vertical living and the demands of a highly competitive property market. In that sense, it is a New York building through and through, shaped by value, constraint and the constant pressure of the city around it.

FKI Tower in Seoul, completed in 2014, is one of the clearer examples of Smith’s post-SOM interest in performance. Designed by AS+GG, the tower uses building-integrated photovoltaic panels across its façade. These are angled to collect solar energy, while other parts of the outer skin help control glare and reduce heat gain.
Here, the façade has a practical role. It gives the tower its folded character while helping it deal with light, heat and energy use. This is where Smith’s later work becomes particularly interesting. FKI Tower is still a corporate building, and a formal one at that, with its appearance shaped by purpose rather than surface effect, and the environmental measures built into the design from the outset.

Designed for Expo 2020 Dubai and now part of Expo City Dubai, Al Wasl Plaza moves Smith’s work away from the single tower and towards public gathering. Created by AS+GG, it forms a central meeting place beneath a large dome-like structure, with shaded areas, water features and a 360-degree projection surface.
The project is not concerned with height, but with how people use the space. In Dubai, where outdoor public areas have to deal carefully with heat and comfort, that role is central to the design. The plaza provides shade, direction and a shared setting for movement, events and evening use.
Al Wasl Plaza also brings Smith’s later work back to his earlier experience in master planning. It is an architectural centrepiece, certainly, but it comes into its own through enclosure, climate and public movement rather than vertical scale.

Jeddah Tower is one of Smith’s most ambitious unfinished projects. Designed by AS+GG, it has been planned to rise higher than Burj Khalifa and, if completed as intended, become the tallest building in the world.
The project returns to a question that has followed Smith through much of his career: how far can a building rise and still feel architecturally controlled? As with Burj Khalifa, the answer rests on structure, tapering form and the careful handling of wind, use and proportion.
Jeddah Tower remains unfinished, but it still holds an important place in Smith’s work. Beyond the question of completion, it shows how height can become a statement of national ambition, urban growth and engineering confidence.

Beyond the literary and romantic however, lies an architectural movement of extraordinary ingenuity, shaped by centuries of faith, innovation and cultural exchange. 

The earliest examples of Gothic architecture appear in 12th century France, but by the turn of the 16th century, the term ‘Gothic’ was increasingly used as a pejorative. Italian architect Giorgio Vasari famously dismissed the style as a “barbarous German manner” symbolic of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. In his eyes, Gothic architecture was an aberration – a rupture from the balanced symmetry and rational clarity of classical antiquity. 
The name itself comes from the Goths, the East Germanic tribes whose sack of Rome came to mark the fall of a golden age. In blaming them for the cultural decay of the Roman world, the label ‘Gothic’ became shorthand for architectural decline – an aesthetic scapegoating of sorts.

One of the first true expressions of early Gothic architecture is the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis in Île-de-France. By the early 13th century, Gothic architecture had matured into something grander, taller, and more theatrically expressive. Often referred to as ‘High Gothic’, this phase of the movement was marked by greater structural confidence and a sharpened emphasis on intricacy. The most well-known example is the Notre-Dame de Paris. 
Construction of the Notre-Dame first began in 1163 and took nearly two centuries to complete – a timeline that’s visible in the building itself. Its twin towers, elaborate rose windows, and sculptural façades reflect a style in transition, evolving as new techniques emerged. One of its most captivating features is the western façade, which depicts the narrative of the Last Judgement through stone sculptures and gargoyles. Its three rose windows stretch over 10 metres in diameter and still contain much of the original glass from the 13th century. Another significant example of High Gothic architecture is Reims Cathedral – the coronation church of the French monarchy during the Middle Ages. While scholars of the Renaissance once dismissed Gothic architecture as ‘barbarous’, Victorian-era Britain embraced it with fervour. It was also fuelled by critics of industrialisation, who saw the Gothic as more humane and artistic than the cold rationalism of the modern age (something of a spiritual antidote). 
The most vivid expression of this revival is the Palace of Westminster in London. Rebuilt after a fire in 1834, the new Houses of Parliament were designed by Charles Barry, with exquisite Gothic detailing by Augustus Pugin. The result is a 300-metre sweep of ornate masonry along the Thames, with pointed spires, ribbed vaulting, and stained-glass panels bearing the crests of saints, monarchs and parliamentary constituencies. It’s a fitting reminder that even in the age of glass and steel skylines, there’s still space for a style that puts emotion and complexity above all else.
