Tuckahoe, the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson, represents a significant and enduring piece of both American and Virginia history. Jefferson lived here from 1745 to 1752, during which time his father managed the estate, placing him within one of Virginia’s early plantation landscapes at a formative stage of his life.
The property still features the original one-room schoolhouse constructed by Peter Jefferson for the education of the Randolph and Jefferson children. It is here that a young Thomas Jefferson received his earliest formal education, in a space featuring a unique domed ceiling that represents the future architect's very first encounter with a classical dome.
Constructed by William Randolph, the unique H-frame main house was built in two separate stages, with the north end constructed first in 1733, and the center hall and south wing added by about 1740. It stands today as the only surviving Randolph home still located on its original site.
The home retains a high degree of original material, including period windows, detailed entrances, and extensive early woodwork headlined by the breathtaking, fully paneled black walnut salon, with much of its original layout still intact.
Set on approximately 557 acres to the west of Richmond along the James River, the property includes formal grounds, historic outbuildings, and a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
Crucially, the estate preserves the original outbuildings along Plantation Street, which include the original quarters, the old kitchen, the smokehouse, the storehouse, the barn, and the overseer's office. This rare survival makes Tuckahoe one of the most complete early 18th-century plantation layouts in North America, offering an invaluable and honest window into the complex history of the era.
From its elevated position overlooking the river to its long, cedar-lined approach, the setting continues to reflect its original design and use. To ensure its continuing preservation in perpetuity, the home and its undisturbed, expansive grounds are protected by conservation and historic easements donated to Virginia's Board of Historic Resources and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Designated a National Historic Landmark, Tuckahoe survives today as a remarkably intact example of early American architecture, land use, and history.

A new crown jewel in McLean, developed by Ambar, 1102 Chain Bridge Road commands attention in the prestigious Langley Farms enclave. A newly constructed triumph that fuses contemporary elegance with transitional château attributes, this estate is tailored for the digital age yet crafted with an artisanal touch seldom seen today. Spanning over 16,000 square feet, it is a showcase of forward-thinking design and enduring craftsmanship.

Set on a rare 0.8-acre lot, the approach reveals a gracious cobblestone motor court enveloped by sleek, mature privacy landscaping. Beyond grand double doors, a herringbone-floored foyer offers clear sightlines through the home’s depth, introducing 12-foot ceilings, solid walnut floating stairs, and 10-foot custom wood doors with Emtek hardware. These are testaments to the home's exacting attention to detail. Wide-plank engineered floors and recessed crown uplighting provide a refined warmth throughout.

Designed equally for grand entertaining and everyday comfort, the main level flows effortlessly between formal and informal spaces. At its center is an aspirational chef’s kitchen: dual waterfall islands clad in Spanish marble, Italian composite cabinetry, a vintage Viking 8-burner range, and a full Miele suite. A separate, fully enclosed spice kitchen with its own Miele appliances adds further versatility.

Three floor-to-ceiling collapsible glass walls open to reveal true indoor/outdoor resort living. A covered patio offers ideal al fresco dining, while the marble terrace introduces a stunning heated lap pool with spa, waterfall, hidden drainage, and an automatic cover. A private guest suite with direct patio access and panoramic pool views is quietly tucked away on the main level.

Upstairs, the primary suite is a sanctuary of serenity. Beyond a long corridor and double doors lies a generous sleeping room and private sitting area, divided by a custom linear fireplace. Two sets of French doors open to a private terrace with sweeping views. The spa-inspired bath is clad in Dekton and features radiant heated floors, eight shower heads, a Kallista soaking tub, dual water closets, and separate his-and-hers dressing rooms outfitted in custom Italian cabinetry with illuminated glass displays and center islands.

Additional upper-level bedrooms are grand in scale, each with tray ceilings, custom walk-in closets, and designer en suite baths. A convertible nursery offers discreet access to the primary suite. A spacious laundry room with dual islands and full-height cabinetry completes the upper level.

The lower level is designed for elevated recreation and wellness. Amenities include a professional home cinema, a full bar with a Dekton island, and a fireside lounge wrapped in Porcelanosa tile. A secure safe room with 36-inch concrete walls and a Fort Knox vault door offers peace of mind. The wellness wing is a true retreat, with a steam shower, commercial sauna, fitness studio, and walk-up access to the outdoors.

Engineered for longevity and performance, the home features a commercial-grade elevator, 600-amp electrical service, copper plumbing, five Carrier HVAC zones, and dual 80-gallon water heaters. Infrastructure is in place for a full-house gas generator. A central security suite monitors the 8-camera system, while a sophisticated URC system provides integrated control of Lutron lighting and concealed surround sound via in-wall iPads and smartphones.

The 54-foot four-car garage with soaring ceilings is a dream for the automobile enthusiast. Meticulous landscaping and artful hardscaping unify the estate’s bold presence with its refined aesthetic. With commanding architecture and an unrivaled array of modern amenities, 1102 Chain Bridge Road stands as one of the Capital Region’s most exceptional residential offerings.

Set amid 340 acres in Greenwood, Virginia, Whilton is an exceptional country estate distinguished by its remarkable gardens, expansive grounds and collection of beautifully situated residences and outbuildings.
At the heart of the property stands a stately brick Georgian residence dating to 1900. Offering 6,777 square feet with six bedrooms, four full baths and one half bath, the residence is surrounded by nearly 20 acres of impeccably maintained gardens, where mature plantings, formal and informal garden rooms, broad lawns and established trees create an extraordinary setting around the house and throughout the estate.
Whilton is particularly well suited for entertaining and accommodating family and guests. A two-bedroom guest house and separate two-bedroom pool house provide substantial additional living space, while the pool and clay tennis court create a private recreational setting within the grounds. Two private offices flank the greenhouse, offering an unusually attractive and practical environment for working from the property.
The estate’s equestrian facilities are equally compelling. A handsome brick stable overlooks multiple paddocks and complements the property’s extensive open acreage, while the surrounding landscape provides the privacy and scale expected of a significant Virginia country property.
Despite its sense of seclusion, Whilton is exceptionally accessible. Crozet is approximately five minutes away for everyday conveniences, dining and the amenities of western Albemarle County, while Charlottesville and the University of Virginia can be reached in approximately 20 minutes.
Rarely does an estate of this scale combine significant acreage, extraordinary gardens, extensive guest accommodations, equestrian and recreational amenities, and such convenient access to Charlottesville. Whilton offers a complete Virginia country estate within one of Albemarle County’s most desirable settings.

Set among the rolling hills of Great Falls, Alderley Manor is a five-acre estate inspired by the architecture and landscapes of the English Cotswolds, where light-stone manors rise above open expanses and long vistas. The residence was a collaboration between David Cooper of ACG Architects and BOWA Construction, with further enhancements by Hanlon Design Build. Spanning more than 20,000 square feet, the estate combines architectural integrity, exceptional craftsmanship, and highly considered amenities on a remarkable scale.

A pea stone driveway winds through the grounds to a central flagstone motor court, introducing a residence defined by imported Cotswold limestone, a slate roof with metal seams, copper gutters, and finely finished woodwork. Classic symmetry, steep gables, and towering chimneys establish its distinctly English character, while rich mahogany frames every exterior window and door. Inside, reclaimed antique oak floors, hand-finished millwork, exquisite moldings, hand-carved details, custom built-ins, and oversized fireplace mantels with marble hearths carry the same level of craftsmanship throughout. Formal and informal rooms are generously proportioned yet inviting, with a layout that maintains symmetry while allowing for a natural flow between spaces.
The main level is organized around a light-filled gallery connecting the east and west wings. Formal rooms include a moody library with deep green built-ins and bold ceiling wallpaper, while the informal spaces center around the chef's kitchen, appointed with twin islands, furniture-grade cabinetry, a Lacanche range, and artisanal tilework. The adjacent breakfast room features exposed beams, a stone accent wall, and multiple French doors opening to the grounds. The west wing is devoted to the primary suite, comprising a private garden, sitting room, dual dressing wings, and two luxurious baths. Two offices, including one with a vaulted beamed ceiling, complete the level.

Upstairs, four bedrooms each have a distinct design sensibility and are served by Lagos Azul limestone baths with Waterworks fixtures. The lower level extends the home's entertaining and wellness spaces, with a transverse gallery leading to a professional cinema, climate-controlled wine cellar, and fitness center with spa bath, steam shower, and cold plunge. Billiards and art studio spaces provide additional areas for recreation and creative pursuits.

The estate's infrastructure is equally considered. Commercial-grade systems include a self-sustaining well and septic system, whole-house generator, Lutron lighting, smart HVAC, and comprehensive security, providing seamless operation and independence commensurate with the scale of the property.

Outside, the gardens are a defining element of Alderley Manor. An investment exceeding eight figures in landscaping and horticulture has created a highly composed landscape of manicured gardens, mature trees, and seasonal blooms. The grounds are fully irrigated and softly illuminated by custom landscape lighting, with hundreds of concealed fixtures bringing the property to life after dark. A heated lap pool with retractable cover, pergola-covered dining terrace, and newly installed sports court provide spaces for recreation, entertaining, and relaxation.

For the automotive enthusiast, a modern farmhouse-style garage offers three bays, two lifts, a mezzanine lounge, and cigar bar. Despite its privacy, Alderley Manor is less than a mile from Great Falls Village and minutes from Tysons Corner, the Reston Tech Corridor, and Washington, D.C.

With its rare combination of scale, architectural integrity, craftsmanship, infrastructure, and landscape, Alderley Manor stands among the region's most distinguished private estates.

576 Innsbruck Avenue, Great Falls, VA, 22066

Set amidst 107 bucolic acres between The Plains and Middleburg, in a little-known pocket of grand country estates scattered across Virginia's hunt country, Wayside Manor is a generational compound that carries the grandeur and architectural permanence of the great European estates. The offering encompasses two parcels, including a separate unrestricted six-acre parcel, adding an exceptional layer of flexibility to the property. Conceived as a deliberate meeting of classical architecture, landscape design, and art, the estate was designed above all as a place for a family to live, gather, and make fully their own.

A set of elegant but unassuming gates gives way to a winding drive through wooded privacy and sun-bathed rolling hills, revealing the main residence at last. Designed by noted classical architect Michael M. Franck, its limestone facade is an exercise in perfect symmetry, approached by a Belgian block granite motor court encircling a limestone-capped water feature. Indiana limestone, Brazilian granite, a graduated Vermont slate roof, Tradewood mahogany windows and doors, and custom bronze exterior doors imported from Paris give the house a sense of heft and permanence that belies its construction date.

Inside, a grand center hall with twelve-foot ceilings is floored in broad slabs of Jerusalem gold marble and meets a transverse rear limestone gallery spanning the width of the main level. Mirrored formal living and dining rooms, each extending more than 29 feet, recall a bygone era of lavish entertaining while remaining intimately scaled for daily life. Hand-carved millwork, intricate mantels, and roaring fireplaces carry the strength of the exterior architecture inside.

The evening pavilion holds a formal library with fourteen-foot ceilings and walnut and mahogany paneling. At the opposite end, the morning pavilion forms the heart of the home, also beneath fourteen-foot ceilings, with a chef's kitchen, breakfast area overlooking the walled kitchen garden and cypress pergola, and a generous family room crowned by a striking cherry ceiling. A bluestone terrace beyond creates an effortless connection between indoor and al fresco living.

A four-foot-wide cantilevered staircase rises three stories in one continuous sweep to the upper level, where 10'2" ceilings continue the home's remarkable scale. The primary suite occupies half the footprint and includes a sitting room, private terrace access, expansive dressing room, and lavish bath with radiant heated flooring. Two additional ensuite bedrooms complete the second level, while the third offers two further bedrooms and a generous hall bath. A three-car garage includes a large private suite above, while the lower level offers fitness and massage facilities, an embassy-sized recreation room, and laundry.

Beyond the residence stands a historic log guest house, or summer house, beside a wisteria-covered pergola and sparkling lap pool with sweeping views across the landscape. In the distance, a complex of stables, an enclosed equipment garage, and professional equestrian amenities extends the estate's function and character.

The grounds are the property's true achievement, a meeting of agrarian purity and sophisticated luxury considered with the same seriousness as the house. Tiered lawns climb from the residence toward a temple folly of limestone and granite, positioned precisely on the centerline so the architectural axis carries from the front door to the horizon.

A singular opportunity, never to be recreated and never to lose its timeless splendor, Wayside Manor stands among the nation's finest country estates, a rare meeting of classical architecture, landscape artistry, and family life, conceived in service of the land it graces.

2597 Halfway Road, The Plains, VA, 20198

The 10-foot custom iron entry doors open to a double-height foyer and modern staircase. A generous central hall connects the main rooms and primary suite. Open the doors and the river becomes part of the room. Nearly 12,000 finished square feet offer more than impressive dimensions. The layout lets different parts of the house be enjoyed at the same time. The main level accommodates formal entertaining, everyday meals, a private study and the primary suite. Upstairs provides a separate place to gather and retreat. Below is another setting entirely, designed for evenings with family and friends. The kitchen offers exceptional counter space, a large island and custom cabinetry. Book-matched Italian porcelain provides a striking backdrop to the 60-inch BlueStar range. A built-in Miele coffee system adds everyday convenience. There is room to cook, gather and enjoy a meal overlooking the Potomac. The formal dining room is furnished to seat 12, with room for 14 to 16, and features a glass-enclosed, temperature-controlled wine room. The suite has 2 walk-in closets and a White Star Marble bath with heated floors, a steam shower, an air-bubble tub, dual vanities and separate water closets. Upstairs, an open gallery overlooks the living room and river, with space for a library or conversation area. Beyond it, an upper-level media lounge sits behind closed doors and includes a wet bar with refrigeration. Guests can enjoy their own gathering space near the bedrooms while entertaining continues on the main level. The lower-level lounge has the feel of a private club, with a large custom bar, fireplace and furnished conversation areas. Glass doors lead to the covered terrace and heated spa pool overlooking the Potomac. A dedicated screening room provides a separate setting for movies. The large guest suite also faces the river. Approximately 2,250 additional unfinished square feet offer room for future living or recreation space. Built by award-winning Apex Custom Homes, the residence features European oak floors, substantial custom millwork and Italian porcelain. Phillip Jeffries and Schumacher wallcoverings add texture. Construction includes European stucco over block masonry, Andersen architectural windows and doors and a whole-house Generac generator. The 2-car garage can accommodate hydraulic lifts for up to 4 cars, with additional on-site parking. Nearby Beltway connections provide access to the airports, Tysons shopping and restaurants, and Maryland. Here in McLean, privacy doesn’t require a remote location. The opportunity to purchase the furnishings, art and accessories separately offers the next owner a seamless move into a fully realized home, with each room ready to enjoy as photographed. The scale is impressive. The layout makes it livable. And the Potomac gives it a setting you can’t recreate.

620 Rivercrest Drive, Mclean, VA, 22101

This extraordinary custom-built estate in McLean is a true composition that tells a story of timeless design, enduring quality, and understated luxury. Designed by architect Richard Foster and built by Galileo Group, this 11,600+ square-foot residence was updated by BOWA Builders in 2022. Both structures blend classic materials with modern function, creating a sense of permanence rare in today’s homes.

This home was built without compromise. Eleven-foot ceilings and solid hickory floors introduce an atmosphere of quiet grandeur. At the heart of the home, the renovated kitchen is a statement of both beauty and utility. Custom cabinetry by Dutch Made surrounds a rare 1921 cast iron sink, honed granite and quartzite counters, a hidden pantry, and a Lacanche gas range with multiple ovens. Upstairs, the primary suite offers a vaulted ceiling, fireplace, custom cabinetry and secure storage, and an adjacent cedar-lined seasonal closet. The spa bath includes a zero-threshold steam shower, heated marble floors, and a freestanding MTI effervescent tub—elevating wellness into ritual. Three additional bedroom suites with oversized closets and baths provide comfort and privacy for family or guests; a fourth-floor loft adds charm with built-in beds and a full bath. The lower level surprises with large windows, an exposed brick wall in the large gym, and a family/media room with surround sound. Thoughtful infrastructure, like the Lutron lighting system, copper plumbing with flow sensing/shutoff, dual water heaters, multi-zoned HVAC, grab bars, and an elevator shaft to three levels, speaks to the home’s quality and readiness for multi-generational living.

Adjoining the main residence is a bespoke timber-frame annex—a storybook structure with flagstone and pine floors, a cupola, and its own garage. With Pella windows, a main-level accessible bath, and upstairs bath with plumbing for a full shower, it’s ideal as a guest house, office, classroom, or creative studio.

Outside, over 3,500 square feet of travertine patio frame a PebbleTec-finished gunite pool and spa which were completely refurbished in 2025. Bluestone edging, fountains, a diving board, and a waterfall create a resort-like setting. A built-in Alfresco grill center and outdoor lighting transforms evenings into outdoor feasts, while a playhouse and an extensive irrigation system ensure every corner of the property is cared for and enjoyed.

Positioned behind a tree-lined private drive in the Hanover countryside, Ivy Knoll is a nearly 9,000 square foot estate of uncommon intention, a property conceived not as a collection of rooms but as a complete environment, one where architecture, materials, technology, and landscape have been orchestrated with a precision rarely encountered outside the world's great private residences. From the motor court, the statement is immediate. A facade of solid white rises with the quiet authority of something built to last generations, its custom stone surrounds and sills framing every arched window with the kind of detail that signals the quality concealed within. The Italian fountain at the entrance confirms what is already understood. After dark, the exterior soffit lighting, architectural uplighting, and professionally designed landscape illumination give the estate a nocturnal presence that is, in equal measure, theatrical and refined. The interior rewards a slow walk. The foyer opens onto rooms of genuine depth and character: a custom Italian marble fireplace surrounds the living room, designer wallpaper envelops the master suite, and custom cabinetry flows through every level of the home. The kitchen is appointed with professional grade appliances throughout. The master bath features a zero entry shower. A hidden pantry with a sliding library ladder is concealed behind a seamless wall. The piano room occupies the turret, its custom built-in bench following the gentle curve of the rounded walls. A walk-up third floor attic expands the footprint further still. No room speaks more directly to the spirit of Ivy Knoll than the Jungle Room, opening off the kitchen with its own dedicated entrance from the rear grounds and parking court. A hand-painted tropical mural covers every surface floor to ceiling, a custom octagonal-shaped bar anchors the space, and guests arriving from the back of the property move directly into the gathering without touching the rest of the house. It is a room with a name because it has earned one. The outdoor environment is its own destination. A saltwater heated pool and spa finished in bullnose travertine, flanked by fire bowls and a fire pit table, is managed through a single integrated system. Water spouts animate the pool. A putting green with LED cups extends the grounds into the evening hours. The heated screened porch, accessible through an accordion door, closes the distance between inside and out without sacrificing either. Forested land frames the entire property on all sides. The estate's technical infrastructure is equally serious. A smart home system governs audio, lighting, climate, security, and surveillance from three mounted touchscreen panels throughout the home. Interior and exterior surround sound with subwoofer is present throughout. A whole house generator ensures uninterrupted operation. A whole house water filtration system, conditioned crawl space with three access points, and roof drains encircling the entire home complete the picture of a residence engineered without compromise. There is no comparable property in the Richmond region.

Mount Sharon

Nestled amidst the wooded hills lining the Potomac River, this residence is a Hugh Newell Jacobsen masterpiece and one of the Capital Region’s most prized architectural treasures. A case study in modernist design since its conception in 1971, it was reimagined through a meticulous 2023 renovation by architect Wouter Boer and builder Alair. Set on nearly ten private acres, the property celebrates Jacobsen’s iconic design language while showcasing contemporary craftsmanship.

Arrival is marked by newly installed hardscaping, a reimagined driveway, and a sculptural parking port with pavers. In true Jacobsen fashion, the structure retains its original steel framing and hardware, with crisp, pavilion-like volumes draped over the rolling topography. Expansive panes of glass, upgraded to high-performance double-pane windows, dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior.

A pivoting front door beneath a minimalist entry portico opens to a foyer and interiors defined by white oak flooring and hand-applied Vasari plaster walls. A transverse gallery runs the length of the home, organizing the floor plan and allowing the living spaces to unfold in deliberate procession.

The central living room, grand in scale and anchored by a minimalist gas fireplace, overlooks a verdant backdrop and flows into a library with an integrated wet bar backed by CLE tile. Connected by a fully glazed corridor, the family room features a soaring cathedral ceiling, custom built-ins with marble knobs, and a balcony with glass railings.

The informal wing includes a spacious casual dining area and open kitchen by St. Clair, both opening onto a rear patio through multiple glass doors. The kitchen features bookmatched Monet marble countertops and a full-slab backsplash precisely aligned for visual continuity. Appliances by Miele, Sub-Zero, Thermador, and Fisher & Paykel are discreetly integrated. A generous mudroom leads to the detached, temperature-controlled two-car garage and additional guest parking.

True to Jacobsen’s philosophy of organizing spaces by function, the private wing is thoughtfully separated for tranquility. The reimagined primary suite features its own HVAC system, a custom dressing room, and a spa-inspired bath clad in Calacatta marble. The expanded bath includes an infrared sauna behind frosted glass, a floating double vanity honed from a single marble block, and a walk-in shower room.

Across the gallery, additional accommodations include a secondary suite with a Lacava vanity and two more bedrooms with walk-in closets. These are served by a hall bath with dual marble vanities and a walnut shower floor. A nearby laundry room features limestone countertops and cement tile flooring.

A fully independent guest house offers complete privacy with its own HVAC system, a full bath with cast iron tub, and new decking, ideal for visitors, staff, or extended family.

New systems include six Mitsubishi HVAC units with six-zone climate control, Navien tankless hot water, and a whole-home Generac generator. Integrated technology includes Ketra lighting by Lutron, hidden whole-home audio, automatic blackout shades in all bedrooms, and comprehensive security monitoring.

Park-like grounds framed by towering trees and open lawns create complete seclusion despite proximity to downtown DC and Tysons. An architectural statement of enduring significance, this residence is both a living piece of design history and a thoroughly modern estate, representing a rare convergence of visionary design, masterful renovation, and contemporary living.
