Outdoor Cinemas in Dubai

As the sun sets over Dubai, the city's rooftops and terraces transform into open-air theatres. What began as a simple pleasure – watching films under the stars – has become an art form in itself. Each venue, set against the emirate's distinctive landscape, offers its own interpretation of outdoor cinema.

The concept has evolved considerably in recent years. While outdoor films have long been part of Dubai's entertainment scene, today's sites reflect a deeper understanding of what makes a classic screening more unique in a city that prides itself on only the world’s finest experiences. From hidden rooftop spaces to waterfront settings, here’s where to find the best outdoor cinemas in Dubai.

Outdoor Cinemas in Dubai

VOX Moonlight

The Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound system at VOX Moonlight delivers pristine audio that enhances rather than dominates the space. Located at Galleria Mall, Al Wasl, with views toward the Burj Khalifa, the venue replaces traditional cinema seating with cabanas and oversized loungers. Servers move quietly through the space, bringing everything from sushi platters to cinema classics, while the programme ranges from Hollywood premieres to Arabic and Bollywood releases.

Roxy Cinema Outdoor at Galleria Mall

Special events shape this space – from cult favourites to private screenings – though regular international releases still draw crowds. On Galleria Mall's top level, semi-enclosed cabanas create a more private space for viewings. A 4K projection system handles the technical demands, while the kitchen serves full meals instead of standard cinema snacks, delivering everything from pizzas to fresh salads to each seat.

Urban Outdoor Cinema at Habtoor Grand Resort

Within Al Habtoor City's resort grounds, this garden cinema comes alive during Dubai's cooler months. The area lets its green setting lead the way, with sound and projection systems tuned specifically to the outdoor space. The resort kitchen brings its own flair, serving grilled skewers and Mediterranean mezze alongside popcorn and nachos. As regular films fill the calendar, it's one-off themed nights that make best use of the beautiful environment.

Cinema Akil

Established in 2014 by Butheina Kazim, Cinema Akil brings films that rarely reach mainstream screens to its outdoor space at the 25hours Hotel. The venue is compact – just 72 seats – which suits its carefully selected programme of independent and Arab cinema. Beyond regular screenings, the space hosts special events and festivals, including Arab Cinema Week, celebrating regional filmmaking.

Zero Gravity

Film showings on the beach at this Dubai Marina location are just one element of the experience. The setup changes frequently; some nights, viewers lounge on beanbags in the sand, while other evenings, the movie is accompanied by poolside DJ sets. It’s a departure from traditional outdoor cinema, aimed at those who see film as a backdrop to socialising rather than the main event. The programming reflects this approach, favouring iconic films that complement the beach club atmosphere.

Cinema has been part of Dubai's history since the 1950s when the Al Ghurair family opened the city's first screen in Deira. While that modest beginning served the growing expat community, today's outdoor venues show how far the idea has come. Each space turns the city's natural elements into advantages, creating experiences that couldn't exist anywhere else. In a place known for its indoor attractions, these interpretations remind us that some moments are best shared in the open air.
