Some of the most desirable cars in the world have been built for speed. Every aspect of their design, from the shape of the fuselage to the mechanical components and materials have all been carefully selected to enhance performance. Whether it is a 1930s grand tourer thundering down Le Mans or a contemporary supercar redefining the limits of what’s considered street-legal, the unifying factor is speed. And on 22 May, some of the fastest cars ever built will take the stage at the RM Sotheby’s Milan auction.

Record-shattering rarities and contenders that narrowly missed out on competition glory will stand side by side at the Fonderia Macchi Carlo, each one a snapshot of its era’s engineering ambition and competitive spirit. These vehicles all fit the basic criteria for what it takes to be considered the fastest in the world, though definitions are hardly set in stone.
In order to be considered a recordbreaker, a car must be street-legal, built to be used by actual customers and not just on the racetrack. It must also be able to operate under the same design specs that allowed it to achieve maximum speeds during testing. This has led to its share of debates and controversies as some models attempt to bend the rules.
The seven cars we are looking at below, however, are unquestionably at the top of the game. Each has pushed boundaries of what can be achieved on the road and is a legend in its class.

Some call it the world’s first supercar, and while purists might argue about the engine layout, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing lets its credentials do the talking. A pioneering spaceframe chassis and a fuel-injected straight-six engine capable of delivering 215 horsepower helped achieve a top speed that its rivals could never hope to match.&nbsp;
In 1958, a one-way timed run hit 150.7 mph, which was well short of the 160 mph it claimed to reach, but more than enough to crown it the fastest production car on the planet, beating the Jaguar XK120, former holder of the speed crown, by a full 25 mph.

The Lamborghini Miura may not have invented the mid-engined supercar, but it did put it under the global spotlight. With styling by Marcello Gandini and a howling V-12 courtesy of Giotto Bizzarrini, the Miura was a revolution in both form and speed. It was also an elegant contrast to the AC Cobra 427, which held the title of world’s fastest car prior to that, and was known for its raw, unpolished aggression.&nbsp;
A P400 clocked 171 mph in 1967, raising the bar for performance across the board and leading to its own (brief) unseating by rival Ferrari, who issued a solid challenge with a more traditional front-engined car. By 1970 Lamborghini had secured the title again thanks to the P400 S, which achieved a blazing 179.3 mph.

Even as the Lamborghini Miura shook up the industry, Enzo Ferrari stuck firmly to a front-engined layout. That conviction delivered one last roar in the form of the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Designed by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti and powered by a 4.4-litre Colombo V-12 with 347 bhp, the Daytona was capable of hitting 174 mph, more than enough to claim the title of world’s fastest production car.
What made the Daytona remarkable wasn’t just its speed, but its civility. This wasn’t a stripped-down supercar, but a grand tourer capable of effortless high-speed cruising across countries. Still, mid-engined designs had an undeniable aerodynamic advantage, and Lamborghini reclaimed the crown shortly after.

Lamborghini’s reign as top-speed king didn’t end with the Miura. In 1982, the Countach LP500 S reasserted the carmaker’s dominance. While the earlier LP400 S added a dramatic rear wing that improved stability but clipped top-end speed, the LP500 S countered with a larger 4.8-litre V-12 producing 370 bhp—enough to hit 182 mph in testing.
A year later, Ruf’s BTR clocked 190 mph, pushing Lamborghini to respond with the 1985 LP5000 QV. With a 5.4-litre, four-valve-per-cylinder V-12 and six Weber carburettors, it delivered a ferocious 449 bhp. Its top speed of 190.1 mph set a Guinness World Record, though questions lingered over the factory-modified airbox used in testing.

The Porsche 959 was built for competition, but exceeded its Group B ambitions and was seen as the eventual successor to the 911 Turbo. That future never materialised, as the car’s build cost was double its sticker price, making it unsustainable for mass production. When global markets took a sharp downturn in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Porsche was on the road to bankruptcy and was forced to shelve the 959 to help keep its head above water.
Yet the 959’s legacy is untouchable. It introduced water cooling, all-wheel drive, active suspension, sequential twin-turbos, and exotic materials to Porsche’s road cars. It was a technical marvel, and blisteringly fast: it achieved 197 mph in a Komfort model, while the Sport variant managed 198 mph. The even rarer 959 S pushed that to 211 mph, narrowly missing a return to the top after the Ruf CTR’s 212 mph record.

While the Porsche 959 Sport and Ruf CTR flirted with the edges of what defines a "production car," Ferrari’s F40 left no room for debate. Its popularity resulted in the production of over 1,100 units in comparison to the double-digits runs of the aforementioned cars. Although a top speed of 201mph was claimed, apparently making it the first production car to break the 200 barrier, independent tests couldn’t take it past 199 mph. Ferrari maintained its claim, however, which remains a source of debate.
Born from the ashes of Group B and shaped by the lessons of the 288 GTO Evoluzione and Lancia’s LC2 programme, the F40 was a no-frills weapon. With 471 bhp from a twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V8 and a featherweight chassis made from Kevlar, carbon fibre, and aluminium, it was raw, unforgiving, and utterly focused. The F40 was the last car to be approved by Enzo Ferrari himself, making it a fitting legacy to his vision.

Often overlooked but undeniably impressive, the Jaguar XJ220 remains one of the best-value record breakers of its era. Originally promised with a V-12 and four-wheel drive, the production version arrived during a recession with a twin-turbo V6 instead. Consequently, orders were cancelled and warehouses languished with unsold cars. Yet beneath the controversy was a serious machine: futuristic, fearsomely fast, and every bit a contender.
With 524 bhp, the XJ220 hit 217.1 mph at the Nardò Ring under semi-optimised conditions, with rev limit raised and catalytic converters removed. Even in true road-going form, it reached a blistering 210.5 mph. The vehicle responsible for all of those incredible feats is the 2001 Ferrari F2001, put together by the most skilled design team at the Ferrari Scuderia. Its most significant challenger on the street circuit was the 2001 McLaren MP4-16, driven by 13-time Grand Prix winner David Coulthard. Both of these vehicles went head-to-head on the track in 2001 and are now taking the stage in two separate European RM Sotheby’s auctions. Though not a direct clash this time, both events will undoubtedly set new records. 
 
First up is Milan, where the catwalks of high fashion are exchanged out for motorways showcasing an impressive collection of both classic and modern automobiles. The auction is to be held on 22 May at the Fonderia Macchi Carlo, a former industrial building that has been converted into a grand events space and has previously hosted fashion shows featuring the works of Valentino and Gucci, among others. An emblem of Milan’s unique sense of style, it is the perfect setting for an auction of this calibre. Among the lots up for auction are a 1932 Alfa Romeo by Pininfarina, a rare 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, and the McLaren MP4-16 driven by Coulthard in 2001’s racing season. 
A mere two days later, on the eve of the Grand Prix de Monaco, Schumacher’s iconic Ferrari F2001 will be offered for sale at the racing circuit in Monte Carlo. This is the first vehicle sale being conducted during the race weekend – an exceptional event that befits an exceptional vehicle.

Chassis 211 of the Ferrari F2001 is the only Ferrari driven by Schumacher to secure victory at the Monaco Grand Prix and the World Championship in the same season, making it unquestionably the crown jewel among all of the racing legend’s F1 cars. 
This extraordinary machine clinched pole position and victory at the 2001 Hungarian Grand Prix, where Schumacher sealed his fourth Drivers’ title and Ferrari captured the Constructors’ Championship, securing back-to-back title doubles for the first time in Scuderia Ferrari history. It would also go on to be the last Ferrari Formula 1 car to conquer the streets of Monaco in a title-winning year. 
Powered by a screaming V-10 capable of reaching an electrifying 17,000 rpm, the F2001 represents the peak of Formula 1’s most sonorous era. Its engineering brilliance came courtesy of the Ferrari “super team” of Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne, and Michael Schumacher himself. This quartet reshaped the modern era of Grand Prix racing, producing a car that remains unrivalled in terms of performance and sheer aesthetics. 
Recently overhauled by Ferrari in 2024 and the early months of 2025, this chassis is now presented in full running condition, ready for its next chapter in Corse Clienti or private collection use. A masterpiece of speed, power, and history, it stands as a visceral reminder of when Ferrari ruled Formula 1, and Schumacher etched his name into the sport’s highest pantheon.

This remarkable McLaren MP4-16, one of just seven built for the 2001 Formula 1 season,&nbsp; is a rare survivor from an era defined by intense competition and technical brilliance. It was seen as the biggest threat to Ferrari’s standing at the time, especially when paired with its formidable driver – Richard Coulthard. The Scot outpaced his Finnish teammate Mika Häkkinen to complete his strongest season, and he was seen as the man who was most likely to make Schumacher sweat. It was chassis 16A-05, designed under the visionary direction of Adrian Newey and Neil Oatley, which delivered one of David Coulthard’s most memorable victories by helping him conquer the 2001 Austrian Grand Prix with poise and precision. 
It was also a star performer in qualifying trim, claiming pole positions at both the San Marino and Monaco Grands Prix. The car earned a podium at San Marino and recorded the fastest race laps in both Austria and Monaco, underscoring its speed and adaptability on the world’s toughest tracks. It would, however, fail to topple Schumacher, who took the lead at Monaco and guided Ferrari to a banner season. 
Adding further pedigree, this chassis was piloted by two-time World Champion Mika Häkkinen to a strong third-place finish in Canada, and later evolved into the MP4-16B specification for testing duties with famed F1 race winner Jean Alesi. After its competitive life, the car remained with McLaren until 2020, when it was acquired by its sole private owner. 
Now offered in non-running condition and fitted with a display engine, this car remains a significant piece of McLaren heritage. It is a sharp, sculpted embodiment of the era when Newey’s designs ruled the paddock, and McLaren stood at the very heart of the Formula 1 title fight.

RM Sotheby’s unveils a trio of exclusive sales this April, including Shift Online and two sealed auctions featuring the Gianni Agnelli Collection and a rare Porsche 911 lineup.

In April, RM Sotheby’s is forgoing the traditional auction events for a unique trio of sales that emphasise discretion. Shift Online is one of the auctions lined up for this month, featuring a collection of nearly 100 supercars from across Europe and the Middle East. It is an online-only auction, with bidding open between the 23rd and 28th of April. Lots include a 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT by Scaglietti, a 1988 Bentley Continental Convertible by Mulliner Park Ward, and a 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition. 
Perhaps more intriguing are two sealed auctions, also scheduled for the end of the month, featuring a truly distinctive selection of lots.

Gianni Agnelli held the distinction of being the wealthiest man in modern Italian history and was also the principal shareholder of Fiat. Over the course of his tenure, he controlled over 4% of Italy’s GDP and 16.5% of industrial research investment. Nicknamed ‘L’Avvocato’, or ‘The Lawyer’, Gianni was seen as the most influential figure in Italian business between the 1960s and 1980s and was considered to be the ‘King of Italy’. His influence extended beyond the realm of business; known for his eclectic fashion sense, he shaped trends in the Italian fashion industry and beyond. 
As the grandson of Fiat’s founder, Gianni became the company’s heir apparent after losing his father at the age of 14. Under his leadership, Fiat became the most prominent car brand in Italy and a significant presence across Europe. 
Gianni was a fan of his own cars and owned several custom-built Fiats, as well as cars from other companies he had business interests in. The trio of cars being put up for auction this month are a perfect reflection of his multifaceted tastes and are fantastic examples of what Fiat could produce. 
The most iconic piece in his collection is a 1974 Fiat 130 Familiare, which was commissioned specially for him and remained under his ownership for 11 years. Only three 130 Familiares were ever built, all for members of the Agnelli family, and this is the first of them. Gianni had the car painted silver with faux wood trim, and it is the only one to have a roof rack with wicker basket installed on top, making it instantly recognisable. The car saw plenty of use in the winter months, when Gianni used the wicker basket to ferry his skis to and from the slopes of St. Moritz. 
Aside from his Familiare, Gianni also had a custom Panda 4x4 for winter travel. This was the ‘Mk2’ edition of the Panda, owned and used by Gianni for 15 years before it went into the care of its current consignor. It was recently restored to its original condition, an extensive process that was completed in early 2025. This remains one of the finest Fiat Pandas ever produced. 
The third vehicle is one of two prototype models built by the noted coachbuilder Zagato for Lancia. It was acquired by Gianni, who used it for two years. The car, known as the Lancia Thema Familiare, bears a striking resemblance to the original Familiare, a neat coincidence that brings thematic cohesion to this rare trio. Bidding for the lots is open until 24th April.

It is any collector’s dream to have some of the best sports cars ever made in their collection and to store them together in such a way that they can be brought out to play any time and anywhere. That was the impetus behind the creation of this lot, in which six Porsche 911s from the legendary 991-generation come bundled together with a transport truck. 
The collection comprises a GT3 Touring, 911 R, GT3 RS, GT3, GT3 Cup and GT3 Cup R. All of them are practically brand new, registering a maximum of 50 km of mileage. They have all had only a single owner and some of them have had minor servicing done, primarily oil and brake fluid changes. 
Each car also has some fantastic optional features and detailing included, among them a Bose sound system, 918 Spyder-style seats, full leather interiors and carbon fibre parts. From imposing black to more striking options like Indian Red and Racing Yellow, the colours alone make for an impressive display. 
Bringing it all together is a Rolfo Auriga transport truck with a trailer. It also has specific upgrades designed to accommodate its stunning cargo and has only registered 500km, presented in mint condition. The truck’s engine meets EURO 6 regulations and it comes with an EEC Certificate of Conformity, allowing it to be easily registered across the EU. 
This is without a doubt one of the most unconventional lots that has gone up for auction recently, showcasing an enviable collection of 991-generation Porsche 911s in a uniquely playful way.
