This month, RM Sotheby’s is launching the first of its monthly sealed drop auctions, showcasing a limited selection of one-off cars from around the world with unique design specs. The auction will take place during the last week of the month, with bids opening on Monday 24 March and closing on Friday 28 March. In 2013, McLaren entered the hybrid hypercar arena, following in the footsteps of the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. While it was the last of the trio to be launched, it arguably made the biggest impact. Unlike the Ferrari and Porsche vehicles, which improved on existing designs, the P1 introduced a completely new design language for McLaren that would carry over to its future models. It was a bold reinvention both aesthetically and mechanically, and has come to be almost as revered as its predecessor, the F1. Ultimately, McLaren’s goal was to launch a car that would have a lasting impact on the automotive world and on that front, the P1 surpassed its contemporaries with ease.
Only 375 cars were produced, adding to the model’s exclusivity. Those who were lucky enough to purchase them brand new considered the idea of modifications and making their vehicles bespoke. The most obvious option was to match the specifications of the F1 - still the gold standard amongst McLarens - or to choose one of the custom design options offered by the brand. For some owners, that just wasn’t enough.
Such was the case with the owner of this car, based in Qatar, who went with a completely unique set of specs. Only a few McLaren P1s were finished in matte paint; the owner chose a vibrant matte green. For the exterior accents and the interiors, a vibrant shade of papaya orange that has come to be known as ‘McLaren Orange’ was chosen. Even the logos on the front and back of the vehicle, which would typically be red, were painted orange. The resulting combination carries a visual edge that no other P1 possesses.
This car is being sold from the original owner’s collection, with an odometer reading of 130 km. It is virtually new and is a stunningly unique representation of a model that holds a special place in McLaren’s history.&nbsp;

This Porsche 911 Turbo S was originally delivered to Brumos, a renowned Porsche dealer in Jacksonville, Florida. It was one of 183 US models produced and one of only 3 to have its finished in the elegant Viola Metallic colour. The interiors are wholly unique, featuring Rubicon Grey leather throughout, accented by Speed Yellow stitching, seatbelts, and trim. It also features a digital sound package, heated racing-style seats, Litronic headlights, embossed headrests, and 18-inch light-alloy wheels.
This edition of the Turbo S was the last of the line to be air-cooled, with several technological and mechanical upgrades that made it the most advanced model of its kind.
The car has only had 5 owners, ending up in the hands of the consignor in April 2014. The car has been used in fair weather conditions and has recorded fewer than 26,000 miles. Porsche Westmont in Illinois has regularly maintained the vehicle, in addition to Barnaba Autosport. In the summer of 2022, Barnaba performed extensive mechanical servicing and installed new components.
This is a prime choice for the serious Porsche enthusiast due to its striking colour combination, bespoke design elements, factory assembly by Porsche Exclusive, and fantastic performance. It is among the last examples of what is considered to be the greatest era for Porsche 911.

In the 1980s, German automaker AMG saw rising demand from American customers, which led Hans Werner Aufrecht, one of the founders of AMG, to seek out a US partner. This ultimately led to the founding of AMG North America in collaboration with Richard Buxbaum of Classic Motors in Illinois, whose custom-built ‘Westmont’ cars became a sensation, combining the best of German engineering and American showmanship.
Over the course of their partnership Buxbaum mentioned one day that it was hard to find a Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL in ‘great colours’. The comment stuck with Aufrecht, who made up his mind to develop a singular creation for his business partner.
Aufrecht sourced a German-made 500 SEL in the very rare Lapis Metallic Blue, only available on limited models due to production difficulties. The chrome trim on the exterior was also carefully colour-matched to the same shade. Its unique hue earned the car the moniker ‘Blueberry’, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. All of the interiors were finished in Orion Grey leather, with lighter and darker accents in some parts. Even the zebrano wood on the dashboard and the wooden console storage box were redone in pickled grey.&nbsp;
Blueberry was meant as a Christmas gift for the Buxbaums with an invoice that was, cleverly, addressed to Richard's wife, Robin. It saw plenty of use over the next 15 years as both a family and business car, before it was sold to billionaire Rick Cohen, an AMG client who was seeking a car in a unique colour. Five years after use, Cohen decided to upgrade to an even newer car and Blueberry returned to the Buxbaums. They sold it again shortly after to Mercedes-Benz specialist John Quay, who had helped maintain the car when it was part of Cohen’s fleet. Quay used the car from the early 90s until about 2007, after which it was put away in a covered barn.
The Buxbaums would come to regret their sale for purely sentimental reasons, as Blueberry was such a unique gift from Hans Werner Aufrecht (and the only such gift he ever bestowed upon Richard Buxbaum for the entirety of their partnership). They tried to get the car back from Quay to no avail until October 2022, when he called Richard to come and collect it, suggesting that only he could give it the restoration it deserved. Working with two of the top restoration experts in the greater Chicago area, Richard painstakingly restored Blueberry to near-original condition over a period of 26 months.

Coinciding with Watches &amp; Wonders, the horology industry’s signature trade show in Geneva, this event will be Sotheby’s second collaboration with Heist-Out. The first one, titled Rough Diamonds, took place last year inside a wine cave in Geneva – an underground auction that proved to be as triumphant as the adventurous vintage watches that sold out in less than an hour. Rough Diamonds was a groundbreaking event that celebrated the vintage watch market’s most unconventional references. This year’s AREA_51 exhibition and live auction is a covert collective dedicated to alien wristwear and uncovering the truth behind a UFO phenomenon. While last year’s Rough Diamonds auction focused entirely on vintage lots, &nbsp;AREA_51 presents classic as well as contemporary lots, with new unique pieces designed specifically for the sale, such as the two references by Furlan Marri and Toledano &amp; Chan.

Moving the concept into outer space, the UFO-themed watch exhibition unfolds over three days, followed by an evening reception and the live auction on 3 April. Held inside a cultural venue that resembles a crash-landed UFO in Geneva, the event will deliver a fully immersive experience transforming the salesroom into “a top-secret alien research station”. The success of the Rough Diamonds sale last year prompted Sotheby’s to revisit this singular format and expand the thematics to outer space. If last year’s theme took the audience to the depths of the earth, this year’s theme propels watch lovers onto a galactic journey filled with out-of-this-world horology pieces. Named after the infamous government site in Nevada that is alleged to harbour extraterrestrial life, the AREA_51 auction inspired some of the boldest watches ever on display, and the curation was based on “alien designs and materials that appear to have been created on another planet”.

Toledano &amp; Chan continue to push the boundaries of design with the B/2 prototype, created exclusively for AREA_51. Drawing inspiration from fighter jets – specifically the Lockheed Martin F-117 Stealth – the timepiece perfectly aligns with the sale’s theme. The F-117 was developed at the legendary Lockheed Skunk Works, located in Area 51, marking the move as an apt tribute to aerospace innovation. The B/2 new case design has no right angles – its asymmetrical crystal scatters and reflects light in unexpected ways. The dial, plated in 24k gold, adds a striking contrast to the watch’s futuristic geometry; gold was used extensively in the F-117 for thermal shielding. A unique take on Toledano &amp; Chan’s signature architectural approach, this singular creation is estimated at $13,363.

At its core is the Calibre 7001 from Peseux, a manually wound movement offering a 42-hour power reserve. The redesigned bridges, with diamond-polished bevels, are hand-finished in Geneva. Estimated at $13,390, this superb timepiece redefines the Disco Volante series.

Top classic cars from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum showcased at RM Sotheby’s Miami Auction, featuring rare automotive legends.

RM Sotheby’s, the world’s leading name in classic car auctions, joined together with Sotheby’s auction house to launch ModaMiami, a first-of-its-kind luxury experience in March 2024. The immensely successful inaugural event was a love letter to all things automotive with auctions and showcases from RM Sotheby’s, alongside a high-end retail experience featuring curated pieces, as well as live entertainment and haute cuisine. ModaMiami returns for its second edition from 27 February to 2 March, and will be held once again at the Biltmore Coral Gables. 

The event will kick off with an exhibition and auction from RM Sotheby’s, with lots including rare vehicles from the collection of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) Museum. Below are a few of the most intriguing cars up for auction.

During a golden era of motor racing when Ferrari was dominating the circuit with six consecutive wins at Le Mans, Ford was looking for a way to break that streak. Despite its GT40 Mk I model having a solid showing at the 1965 Le Mans race, none of the cars were able to finish. Renowned builder Shelby American, working alongside names like Holman-Moody, modified the existing model to create the GT40 Mk II. It was modified to accommodate a larger NASCAR engine, complemented by a sleeker aerodynamic body, cooling systems at the front and rear, and a nose that would stay lower to the track. 
The car was entered in the 1966 12 Hours of Sebring, piloted by Walt Hansgen and Mark Donohue from Holman-Moody. They achieved the best ever finish for the team in 2nd place (and Ford took all three spots on the podium), which led to them competing in Le Mans. Hansgen suddenly and tragically passed away prior to the race, and Donohue was paired up with Australian racer Paul Hawkins. Due to a myriad of technical issues while traversing the gruelling Circuit de la Sarthe, this vehicle was unable to finish the race, but the model still did Ford proud as all three spots on the podium were taken by GT40 MkIIs. 
The car was eventually retired and joined the IMS collection in 1968. It had been refinished prior to that, and underwent a restoration in 2011 to its original colours and design specs. As one of only eight GT40 Mk IIs ever produced, this is a remarkable piece of racing history.

First developed by Mercedes in 1906, this model would earn the moniker of ‘Brookland’ as the result of a stellar performance on the Brooklands circuit in England - the first purpose-built racing circuit in the world. A one-off version of the model was built in 1908 for the specific purpose of participating in Austria’s gruelling Semmering Hill Climb. It featured a larger engine than was typically allowed for Grand Prix races, and was driven by Otto Salzer to victory. 
Following this, the car was sent back to the factory and fitted with a larger motor that produced 150 horsepower from its impressive 17.3-litre engine, the only one of its kind ever built. Salzer once again drove the car to pole position at the 1909 Hill Climb, setting a record that would go unchallenged for the next 15 years. Later that year, it would achieve 3rd place in the Champion du Monde against highly stacked competition. After that race, it was fitted with larger Michelin tyres and by the end of the year, had been sold to an Australian buyer. The vehicle changed hands a few times across Melbourne over the next few decades, having its seats replaced with metal aircraft seats. 
In 1955, the Brookland was sold to David Gray Jr., whose family was one of the earliest investors in Ford Motor Company and who himself was a noted automobile collector. It stayed with him until 1964, when it was sold to the IMS Museum and maintained in immaculate condition with the occasional tour or concourse appearance. The Brookland was one of a few cars taken to England for 2003’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, and was part of the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It maintains many of its original mechanical components and has its original ID tag, which is extremely rare for a vintage competition Mercedes.

This car was a passion project worked on and raced by Zachary Arkus-Duntov, better known as ‘Zora’. In love with racecars from a very young age, Zora moved to New York as a young man and found great success selling munitions for the American war effort alongside his brother. He would go on to sell parts for Ford, race at Le Mans, and eventually become part of Chevrolet’s Corvette programme. 
The Corvette was on the verge of being discontinued by GM in 1955, until Zora decided to give it a boost. The body and engine were redesigned and the new machine was put to the test at the 1956 12 Hours of Sebring, piloted by Zora himself. It put in a solid performance, finishing 9th and winning in its class, which led to a bump in sales. However, it was abundantly clear that in order to really compete with the top names in the sport, Chevrolet needed a purpose-built racer designed for performance.&nbsp; 
To fulfil that vision, Project XP-64 was founded, later renamed to Corvette Super Sport (SS). Made of lightweight magnesium with several experimental parts, the car was nothing short of stunning. However, it ran into several mechanical and technical issues during its maiden race that forced it into retirement shortly after. It did, however, find a new level of fame and was featured at motor shows and on automotive magazines for years afterwards before ending up in the collection of the IMS museum. The Corvette SS is a singular piece of history, built and championed by a man who would be a lifelong Corvette ambassador long after retiring from the company. <h2>Ferrari in the United States</h2>
The Ferrari 250 LM played a significant role as part of the North American Racing Team (NART), formed by famed Italian racecar driver Luigi Chinetti. In fact, Chinetti is a name indelibly linked to the history of Ferrari in the United States. His journey to becoming Ferrari’s North American ambassador is as remarkable as the cars he helped popularise. Trained as a mechanic in his father’s workshop, Chinetti joined Alfa Romeo at the age of 16, where he met Enzo Ferrari, then a young racing driver. This meeting would forge a lifelong bond between the two men, laying the groundwork for Chinetti’s later role as Ferrari’s gateway to the United States.
In the 1930s, Chinetti’s racing career began to take shape and he became a fixture at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, competing in every race from 1932 to 1953 and securing wins for Alfa Romeo in 1932 and 1933. However, his crowning achievement came in 1949 when he delivered Ferrari’s first-ever Le Mans victory. Driving a 166 MM for almost 23 hours of the race, Chinetti’s extraordinary performance etched his name into motorsport history and cemented Ferrari’s reputation on the world stage.
After World War II, Chinetti emigrated to the United States, becoming a citizen in 1950 and establishing himself as the North American importer for Ferrari. He initially operated out of New York City before relocating to Greenwich, Connecticut. Chinetti’s dealership became synonymous with Ferrari’s allure and his influence extended beyond sales. Chinetti would eventually found the North American Racing Team (NART) in 1957, which became a crucial partner in Scuderia Ferrari’s operations, enabling Ferrari to earn valuable World Championship points in North America.
The team was wildly successful, competing in prestigious events such as the 24 Hours of Daytona, the United States Grand Prix, and, most notably, Le Mans. Over nearly 25 years, NART fielded almost 70 Ferraris at Le Mans, more than any other team outside of Scuderia Ferrari itself. Among these, one car stands out even today: the Ferrari 250 LM.

<h2>The Ferrari 250 LM: A Le Mans Legend</h2>
Introduced at the 1963 Paris Salon, the 250 LM represented a significant evolution in Ferrari’s engineering. It was the first Ferrari GT car to feature a mid-engine layout, a configuration that had proven successful in Ferrari’s Formula 1 cars. Designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, the 250 LM combined advanced aerodynamics with a powerful V12 engine that was upgraded from a 3.0-litre model to a 3.3-litre, offering both beauty and performance. Despite its promise, the car faced challenges as the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) refused to approve it as a GT-class car, relegating it to the prototype category and limiting its competitive opportunities. A frustrated Enzo Ferrari passed the car on to privateers like NART, who recognised its potential.
In 1965, one of NART’s 250 LMs—chassis number 5893—achieved an extraordinary victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Driven by American Masten Gregory and Austrian Jochen Rindt, the car overcame a field of more advanced prototypes, including entries from Ford and Ferrari’s own Scuderia. The race’s early hours saw 5893 holding steady in the mid-pack. However, as mechanical issues sidelined competitors, the NART Ferrari began to climb the leaderboard. By the 21st hour, it had taken the lead, ultimately securing a five-lap victory over the second-place 250 LM.
This triumph was historic on multiple levels. It marked the first time a privateer-entered Ferrari had won Le Mans outright, and it extended Ferrari’s record to six consecutive victories at the storied race. Remarkably, this would be Ferrari’s last overall win at Le Mans for 58 years, until the 499P’s victory in 2023.

<h2>A Storied Career</h2>
Chassis 5893’s success at Le Mans was just the beginning of its illustrious racing career. In 1966, the car competed in the inaugural 24 Hours of Daytona, finishing 9th overall. It returned to Daytona in 1968, driven by Masten Gregory and David Piper, but an accident forced its retirement. Later that year, it participated in the rescheduled 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it unfortunately retired again after an accident. Despite these setbacks, the car demonstrated remarkable resilience, returning to Le Mans in 1969 and finishing an impressive 8th overall—a notable achievement for a five-year-old race car.
The 250 LM’s final outing came at the 1970 24 Hours of Daytona, where it climbed from a 44th-place start to finish 7th overall. This performance underscored the car’s enduring competitiveness and cemented its legacy as one of Ferrari’s most iconic race cars.

With just 32 examples built, it is a rare and highly coveted model, embodying Ferrari’s commitment to innovation and excellence. Today, the 250 LM is celebrated not only for its racing achievements but also for its timeless design and engineering brilliance. Chassis 5893, in particular, stands as a monument to Ferrari’s endurance racing legacy, a car that defied the odds to claim one of motorsport’s greatest prizes. Its story is a reminder of the passion and perseverance that define the Ferrari brand—qualities that continue to inspire generations of enthusiasts and racers alike.
After its final race in April 1970, the 250 LM was sold to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and has been carefully preserved for 54 years. It is a highlight of the museum’s vast collection and has been presented at concours events and motors shows. The car has authentic parts including its engine and gearbox, and is being sold with copies of ownership from Luigi Chinetti, copies of the paperwork for all 3 Le Mans races it participated in, as well as copies of the purchase documents from the museum.
