McLaren Headlines the Inaugural RM Sotheby’s Sale in Abu Dhabi

RM Sotheby’s debuts in Abu Dhabi with rare McLarens, including the iconic 1994 F1 and exclusive unreleased models, celebrating automotive legacy.

In 2024, RM Sotheby’s made its UAE debut at Al Serkal Avenue, Dubai’s contemporary arts hub. The sale was such a success that it graced the city again in December, this time at the prestigious grounds of the Emirates Golf Club, where another showstopping auction resulted in several record-breaking acquisitions. Chief among them was a rare Aston Martin Valkyrie purchased by a longstanding client of Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty, bridging the world of luxury automotives and high-end real estate.
Abu Dhabi has stepped forward to bask in some of the limelight enjoyed by its more widely known neighbor in 2025. This year’s RM Sotheby’s sale swaps out the verdant environs of the golf course for the golden shores of Saadiyat Island - Abu Dhabi’s cultural heartbeat. The sale will be the culmination of the first Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week, a series of talks and exhibitions centred on the art of collecting.
RM Sotheby’s will be showcasing a stunning and limited collection of lots at their inaugural Abu Dhabi sale, headlined by an iconic 90s Mclaren model. The auction house has also entered a unique partnership with McLaren that will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own three as yet unreleased and unraced vehicles. Featuring cutting-edge engineering and technology, these cars will represent a new chapter in the marque’s celebrated legacy. We take a look at the exciting cars up for bid below.

<h2>1994 McLaren F1</h2>

Celebrated F1 designer Gordon Murray and his team set out to incorporate racing technology and engineering into a road car during the 90s, adamant that his creation would be only for the road and not the track. The goal was a simple one - to create a supercar that would redefine the driving experience. The result, however, was a vehicle that found its place in racing legend as a modified GTR version was ultimately produced. Making its grand debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, the modded racecar clinched first place and led a McLaren-heavy top 5 finish (only missing out on 2nd place). Specs that included a naturally aspirated 6,064-cc BMW V12, a gold-lined engine bay and a streamlined three-seater design helped the car hit a top speed of 391 km/h, which was more of an exciting byproduct than a planned result.&nbsp;
Only 64 versions of the road-specific version were made, with Chassis 14 being commissioned for the Royal Family of Brunei in a stunning Titanium Yellow with black leather interiors. It was later purchased by former McLaren director David Clark and then by a longtime F1 enthusiast from the United States. In 2006, a long-term owner would acquire it and send it back to McLaren headquarters for a complete refit. The original yellow was replaced by Ibis White, the interiors were converted to LM specification, and Chassis 014 became the last of eight F1 to be modified with the popular High-Downforce Kit. Other upgrades included new headlights, a racecar-style driver’s seat, and more use of exposed carbon fibre. More than $500,000 was spent on the entire process, catalogued through an extensive series of photographs.
Most notably, the car had been signed by Michael Schumacher in 1996, two days after the Australian Grand Prix. The repainted chassis bears the signature of Sir Lewis Hamilton during his rookie season.
The rebuilt car saw plenty of use on US roads over the next decade, which has made it something of a North American icon. Combined with its royal provenance, impressive performance specs and association with a historic period for McLaren, Chassis 014 is bound to be the centrepiece of any collection.

<h2>2026 McLaren Formula 1 Team MCL40A</h2>

In 2026, F1 cars are going to see a major change with all-new specs: 20cm shorter, 10cm narrower and 30kg lighter. Additionally, new systems will be implemented for generating more downforce, and the already advanced power units will be made fully sustainable.
Following an incredible 2025 season, McLaren has no intention of letting regulatory changes slow it down. The MCL40A is expected to be the new crown jewel of the marque’s racing ambitions for next year. Fitted out to all necessary specifications, it is powered by a hybrid unit designed by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. The car will officially be unveiled at the start of 2026, but one lucky bidder will be able to acquire it ahead of its debut.
In order to keep McLaren’s engineering secrets away from prying eyes, only a non-working show model will be delivered to the winner of the auction in December. The actual car - raced by either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri during the season - will only be handed over in early 2028.
Included in the sale is a chance to meet the F1 Racing team and to tour the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking prior to the start of the season. The new owner will also be able to attend the official launch of the car and two races, plus other bonuses.

<h2>2027 McLaren United Autosport WEC Hypercar Team LMDh</h2>

It has been three decades since McLaren achieved its historic win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (led by the race version of the top car on our list). Unveiled for the 2027 season, the LMDh hypercar will be the marque’s entry for the FIA World Endurance Championship, comprising eight endurance races including Le Mans. It features a Dallara chassis driven by a hybrid V-6 twin-turbo engine, with further specs naturally kept under wraps for the time being.
Like the MCL40A, the LMDh will also be delivered to its new owner early in 2028, decked out in its season livery. The buyer will also receive a book cataloguing the car’s track history and an autographed suit worn by one of the team’s drivers who will take the wheel in 2027. Other extras include an exclusive tour of the McLaren Technology centre, 4 VIP tickets to Le Mans, two tickets to the <a href="https://sothebysrealty.ae/the-journal/monaco-grand-prix/" rel="noopener">Monaco Grand Prix</a> and Indy 500, plus two tickets to every 2027 WEC race - all complete with a hospitality experience.

<h2>2026 Arrow McLaren IndyCar Team Dallara-Chevrolet DW12</h2>

McLaren made its debut at the Indianapolis 500 in 1970 and, after a decade of races, turned its attention to the <a href="https://sothebysrealty.ae/the-journal/formula-1-miami-grand-prix/" rel="noopener">F1 Grand Prix</a>. In the late 2010s the marque returned to the Indy 500 track and joined forces with Arrow Schmidt-Peterson Motorsport to create the unstoppable Arrow McLaren, achieving its best-ever performance in 2025.
The entrant for the 2026 season is a Dallara-designed chassis powered by a Chevrolet engine running on 100% renewable fuel. Like the others, this car will also be delivered in early 2028. Extras include four VIP Indy 500 tickets that includes a ride around the speedway, as well as a visit to the brand new Arrow McLaren facility, dinner with President Kevin Thimjon and 2013 winner Tony Kanaan, plus a set of overalls worn and autographed by 2025 runner-up Pato O’Ward.

Engineering Marvels: Two Exceptional Cars at the RM Sotheby’s London Sale

Discover RM Sotheby’s London auction highlights: a 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C Zagato and 2024 Aston Martin Valkyrie ‘Anemos’, rare automotive masterpieces.

For close to 20 years, RM Sotheby’s has been the premier automotive auction in London, and indeed the UK. It is a staple of the capital’s event calendar, showcasing some of the world’s rarest classic cars year after year. In 2024, the sale found a new venue in The Peninsula London, which was officially inaugurated earlier that summer. Combining expansive grounds with a majestic locale and impeccable service - not to mention a stellar lineup of lots - the sale raised the bar to stratospheric levels.
RM Sotheby’s returns to The Peninsula this year, where the sale will serve as the culmination of London Motor Week, running from 27 October to 2 November. The sale will also lead into the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, another annual staple that will mark the 129th anniversary of the 1896 Emancipation Run in 2025. Since 1930, the Royal Automobile Club has been in charge of the event, and RM Sotheby’s is proud to be a title sponsor.
In anticipation of the upcoming sale, we take a look at two intriguing cars from vastly different automotive eras. Each one pushed the boundaries of design and engineering, was only produced in very limited quantities, and stands out as an exemplar for its respective marque.

The 1930s saw several nations vying for dominance on the racetrack, with only Alfa Romeo and its iconic monopostos from the era coming anywhere close to besting the German Silver Arrows. While technological innovation certainly helped Germany maintain pole position, very little of that made its way to the road. The Alfa Romeo 2900 distinguished itself on that front, with a design approach that was refined on the track and ultimately applied to everyday use. The chassis was a prime example of that, with a relatively lightweight design, alongside independent suspension and oversized drum brakes. The standout feature of the car was its engine, derived from that of the 1934 P3 Tipo B, a car that was seen as a racing legend. Its twin-supercharged, 2,905 cc eight-cylinder was a true marvel of engineering.
Alfa Romeo produced just 38 examples of the 2900, of which only a handful can be found today. Some of the most sought-after models were the so-called ‘Long Spiders’, where the term ‘long’ was a bit generous as the wheelbase was only extended by 20cm from the original body. Even this marginal extension made the two-seater configuration significantly more comfortable, however, and thus much more desirable.
Chassis number 412011 was built in 1937 and owned by German ceramics magnet Ernst Carstens who commissioned a locally built Cabriolet body for the vehicle. Records during the war are hazy, but it is believed that the car remained with the Carstens family until the mid-1950s. After changing owners a few times, it underwent a partial restoration in 1969; the chassis was rebuilt but the original engine - which had been replaced by a different unit over the years - could not be restored.
Noted Alfa Romeo collector and restorer David Black went on to acquire Chassis 412011 in the 1980s and took on a large-scale restoration project. He was guided by the mistaken belief (commonly accepted as factual at the time) that the car had originally been a shorter, sportier model that had been extended to form the Cabriolet body. As such, his goal was to bring it back to its ‘original’ condition. Though Black sadly passed before his project came to fruition, the car remained with his family and the torch was passed on to a trio of restorers nearly two decades later who would complete the job.
Many original numbered components have been retained and additional servicing was done in July 2025, including a full rebuild of the engine. Notably, the original Cabriolet body comes with the car so it can be displayed as it was originally built, or with its sportier design.
This is a significant piece of Alfa Romeo history, kept in exemplary condition through more than four decades of single-family ownership. Apart from its rarity, what makes this car truly special is the intricacy of its engineering during an era of innovation. It will easily elevate any car collection with its presence.

Adrian Newey, one of the designers behind many F1 championship racers, teamed up with Red Bull and Aston Martin in the early 2010s to create a next-gen hypercar. It was dubbed the ‘Nebula’, a nod to the aerospace-grade engineering that went into its design and a sly reference to the names of the three stakeholders involved.
The final model would be dubbed Valkyrie after the mythical Norse warriors who were known for riding winged horses - a fitting name for a car that could rival any racer in terms of design specs and performance. The Valkyrie’s chassis is predominantly carbon fibre with no steel at all to keep it light, while the design makes it aerodynamic without the need for devices that would break its silhouette. At its core, a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 revs up 1,160 horsepower. Adding to its impressive engineering specs, it reportedly has the smallest brake light for a production car and is fitted with a hydraulics system featuring Apache helicopter parts to keep up with its performance.
Presented at auction is one of 25 bespoke Valkyries built in a right-hand drive configuration out of 150 road-legal coupes. This car - dubbed ‘Anemos’ after the Greek word for wind - has a design that is as impressive as its specs. It has one of the most extensive options packages of any Valkyrie, adding more than 500,000 to its ticket price. Purple-tinted exposed carbon fibre and matching purple Alcantara interiors are exquisitely accented by 24-carat gold leaf across the body and in details like the steering wheel toggles and the engine star button. Golden Aston Martin logos and ‘Anemos’ logos adorn the vehicle, with matching honeycomb wheels and golden embroidery on the seats.
The car, which was registered in March 2024 just two months after completion, had recorded only 112 miles at the time of cataloguing. Presented in pristine condition, this Valkyrie is a perfect showcase of 21st century automotive craftsmanship and a display of perfectly rendered bespoke detailing.

<h2>250 Years of Breguet</h2>
This November, Sotheby’s is hosting a historic event that pays homage to Breguet’s 250-year legacy in watchmaking. Culminating with a sale on 9 November in Geneva, the auction will feature many of Breguet’s most stellar examples of horological innovation, curated in collaboration with Montres Breguet SA and Emmanuel Breguet, Vice President, Head of Patrimony and descendant of Abraham-Louis Breguet. The largest auction of Breguet timepieces in a quarter of a century, the sale will spotlight key chapters of the brand’s long and impactful history, offering a mix of pocket watches, wristwatches and clocks. The event marks the 250th anniversary of the foundation of Breguet in Paris in 1775 and will take place as part of Sotheby’s Luxury Sales in Geneva, alongside Sotheby’s bi-annual flagship Important Watches live auction.

Among his most famous patrons was Queen Marie-Antoinette, who commissioned several timepieces from the artist. She was one of Breguet’s earliest and most passionate admirers and wore the pieces herself. She did not hesitate to sing his praises either, at court and among those closest in her circles. Breguet created watch No. 160, now famously known as the ‘Marie-Antoinette’, especially for the Queen. It was an extraordinary piece, featuring every known refinement, complication and function known at the time. The watch wasn’t completed until after her death, remaining a masterpiece forever linked to a queen who never held it. Breguet finished watch No. 160 after the French Revolution and kept it in a safe place, as a mark of his loyalty to the queen.
The master soon became the watchmaker of choice for Europe’s most powerful figures, including Napoleon Bonaparte, King George III and the British Royal Family, as well as the Tsar of Russia, who all sought the very best in horology. The house’s reputation still maintains its precious aura, remaining as strong today as it was in Breguet’s time.

In the first half of the year, transaction volumes reached a high of AED 430 billion – the highest H1 on record – fuelled in no small part by a growing population. Most telling though, isn’t necessarily the volumes, it’s the number of deals crossing into previously uncharted territory, pushing price ceilings higher across every prime neighbourhood.&nbsp;

Against this backdrop, Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty has achieved yet another milestone: the sale of a Signature Villa on Palm Jumeirah for AED 161 million – the most expensive secondary villa sale on the Palm this year. Selling at AED 14,679 per square foot, the sale also represents the second-highest price-per-sq-ft transaction across Dubai in 2025.

This AED 161 million sale may be the most valuable resale on the Palm in 2025, but it’s far from the only benchmark set this year. In March, Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty closed the AED 330 million sale of a villa on Jumeirah Bay Island – the most expensive property ever sold on the island. Brokered by Regan Faulkner and Ioana Armeanu, the home occupied one of just three ELV plots at the tip of the island, with a private beach and sweeping infinity pool. It surpassed the <a href="https://sothebysrealty.ae/the-journal/the-most-expensive-villa-sold-on-jumeirah-bay-island/" rel="noopener">previous record Jumeirah Bay</a> record – also set by the firm – by nearly AED 100 million.
Today, the island has become a byword for privacy and exclusivity, and that momentum shows no signs of slowing. New to the market and represented once again by Faulkner, this AED 395 million villa signals a bullish new pricing reality in Dubai – one that’s being shaped at every turn by the Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty team.

September brings a bit of a lull in the RM Sotheby’s lineup. Autumn signals the beginning of a new academic year and represents a return to form for most of the business world after the langour of summer, so it’s understandable that the car world may need a brief break apart from the monthly sealed drops. A fresh new season will then kick off in October with two prestigious auctions in the US and Germany. 

Each auction brings with it a distinct curation of vintage cars representing two key eras of automotive history. Below, we take a closer look at next month’s RM Sotheby’s sales and some of the most notable lots up for auction.

<h2>Hershey, Pennsylvania</h2> 
The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) established its Hershey chapter in the 1950s and its Fall Meet has since become an annual staple. What began as a gathering of car collectors in the region has ballooned into a global event that is anticipated by every classic car enthusiast across the globe. 
Nearly two decades ago, RM Sotheby’s conducted its first Hershey sale at the meet and soon came to be its official auction. Returning to the Hershey Lodge, this year’s sale will be a showcase of the Brass Era, as well as post-war vehicles and other rare collectibles. 
Apart from the usual assortment of classically elegant sedans and coupes, there are some truly unusual lots on offer that will add a touch of whimsy to any car collection. Among the oldest of the lots is a vehicle that predates automobiles - a Wells Fargo stagecoach from the 19th century emblazoned with ‘US Mail’, signifying its role in the transport of mail and other valuables during the Gold Rush. While it is undoubtedly a conversation starter, the coach is also an undeniable piece of Americana and an iconic piece of US road history. 
And if it’s history that a collector is after, then there can be no better choice than one of the world’s first mass-market automobiles, in the form of a beautifully restored Ford Model T from 1912. This is a stunning example of a vehicle that made the Ford Motor Company a household name and influenced the development of the 20th century automobile industry. Finished in elegant blue with a black convertible top, this car holds multiple awards for the superior quality of its restoration. 
For those who prefer something more heavy-duty to add to their garage, a pair of military vehicles may just fit the bill. An AM General M925 military truck from 1984 is the youngest of the lots and an impressive piece of machinery. Alternatively, or alongside this, a collector may opt for the M3A1 half-track personnel carrier, a crucial piece of WWII history that would have been used to transport Allied soldiers. 
The early 20th century was a golden age for the American circus and travelling performances, and even the vehicles used by these troupes exhibited a sense of showmanship. And nothing says ‘showmanship’ like a circus wagon with a larger-than-life mechanical man attached to the front of it. The so-called ‘Walking Man’ wagon is a marvel of engineering and old-fashioned craftsmanship, and its Stetson-sporting mustachioed figurehead exudes as much star quality today as he did during his heyday in 1922. 
Celebrating America’s rich and varied automotive past, the Hershey auction brings to light a rare selection of collectibles that will elevate any car collection beyond the ordinary.

Since 2021, MotorWorld has been the venue of choice for all things automotive in Munich, featuring versatile event spaces, themed conference rooms, virtual racetracks and a four-star hotel. It is also a space for high-end automotive sales, including the annual RM Sotheby’s auction in October. Celebrating its 4th year, the Munich sale offers up some of the most impressive muscle cars and supercars from the 1950s onwards. Luminaries such as Ferrari and Porsche are to be expected, along with a few other exquisite one-offs. We examine some of the most intriguing picks below. 
The star of the show is Porsche 906, also known as the Carrera 6, which marks its presence with its dramatic orange paintjob and sleek silhouette. Designed as a followup to the hugely successful 904 in 1966, only 65 models were ever produced and only 52 (including the consigned lot) were fitted with a special 2-litre sports engine. Originally sold to Racing Team Holland - courtesy of whom it acquired its unique hue - the 906 distinguished itself on the track before changing hands and colours. Its current consignor restored the car and its vibrant original paint job, fitting it with a 911 engine. It is accompanied by a spare engine block of the correct specification. 
Some of the other standouts include four Ferraris from four distinct eras presented in the carmaker’s signature red. These include a 1973 Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 tourer by Pininfarina and a sleek 2007 Ferrari 430 Scuderia. Some of the more visually striking lots include a 1954 Fiat 8V Bertinelli, a Red Bull Racing RB6 show car from 2010, and a modded 1969 Pontiac GTO from the 2004 film ‘The Punisher’.

If any bottles deserve the status of a true bourbon unicorn, the Old Fitzgerald "Blackhawk" 18 Year Old 121 Proof undoubtedly wears the crown well. Aged for an impressive 18 years, Very, Very Old Fitzgerald bottles are rarely seen and carry immense value, due to their association with the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, whose whiskey has become highly sought after by connoisseurs. Stitzel-Weller became a legend among bourbon aficionados, and despite closing in 1992, the distillery’s mystique continued to grow and capture interest. Even though a limited amount of distilling still takes place within the distillery, it mainly serves as a tourism and bourbon education venue. 
Sotheby’s New York auction will feature an exclusive ‘Blackhawk’ 121 Proof, bottled exclusively for the Chicago Blackhawks and Wirtz family, which should read "Barrel 121 Proof" on the shoulder label.

enjoy it neat, on the rocks, or mixed into cocktails. Having been produced for over 2000 years, the origins of Moutai can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) when it was exclusively reserved for the imperial court. 
Moutai is made by fermenting sorghum and other grains with a singular yeast strain unique to the brand. The mash is then distilled in clay pots and aged for years in oak barrels. 
The liquor has seen its demand rise over the course of the last five years and continues to cement its presence globally, outside the realm of Chinese culture. In 2021, Sotheby’s London sold a crate of the beloved “Sun Flower” Kweichow Moutai for over £1 million ($1.4 million), realising the highest price for a single lot of Moutai outside of China, also making it the most valuable Moutai case the auction house had offered to date.

Having won the esteemed Cartier Award, she was also commissioned to create complete high jewellery collections for other legacy brands, including Louis Vuitton and Chaumet. 
Equipped with finely tuned high jewellery making skills, Martin returned to her soul city, London and founded Hannah Martin Jewellery brand in 2006.

She first touched base with this concept while working at Cartier, in the heart of Parisian jewellery heritage, where she first fell in love with precious metals – gold, especially.&nbsp; 
Persistently questioning the gender bias in the jewellery world, she could not understand why jewellery had to be so different for men and women. On that note, she launched her very first collection in 2005, which laid the foundation for her cross-gender, bold, androgynous and sculptural style that still sets her apart in today’s highly competitive luxury landscape.

Sotheby’s Salon will also show other pieces from Hannah Martin’s core collections, including the sculptural Ring of Fire from White Heat, vivid emerald-set jewels from Delirium, and select works from Somebody’s Sins, Aguila Dorada, and It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll.
