South Asia has never submitted to a single story. Its histories are plural, its artistic traditions layered across centuries of exchange, rupture, and reinvention — and any exhibition that attempts to compress that complexity into a coherent whole risks losing precisely what makes it compelling.
Sotheby's South Asian Edit, on view at the New Bond Street flagship from 13 July to 7 August 2026, takes a more considered approach. Rather than a survey, it offers six focused encounters — each dedicated to an artist whose practice opened new ground — allowing the work to speak on its own terms. The result is a selling exhibition of rare intellectual breadth, one that rewards close attention.

To understand the arc of modern Indian art, it is difficult to avoid Francis Newton Souza. A founding member of the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group, Souza arrived on the scene in the years following Indian independence with a visual language that owed as much to European Expressionism as it did to the traditional imagery from the Indian subcontinent, and a temperament that made him unwilling to soften either. Religious iconography, portraiture, and landscape were constant underlying themes and came out charged with intensity that challenged social conventions. Owing to his exploration of faith, morality, identity, and the human condition, he grew to be known as the enfant terrible&nbsp;of modern Indian art.
Born in Goa in 1924, Souza relocated to London in 1949, which was followed by years of difficulty before a sold-out exhibition at Gallery One in 1955 brought his work to international attention. The ‘Black Paintings’ of the 1950s and 1960s remain the defining body of his output: raw, uncompromising, impossible to place neatly within either the Western or South Asian canon.
The centrepiece of his presentation in the South Asian Edit is Crucifixion (1984), a painting of altarpiece scale in which Souza depicts himself offering Communion beneath the Cross. The Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Eucharist are collapsed into a single composition that’s dense with symbolism, freighted with the ambivalence toward faith that animated his practice across five decades.

Where Souza's career was defined by a singular, confrontational vision, Mohan Samant's was defined by its opposite: a refusal to be pinned down. A fellow member of the Progressive Artists' Group, a large part of Samant’s process was continuous experimentation across media, techniques, and imagery. He moved through the cave paintings of Lascaux, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Indian miniatures, African sculpture, and the innovations of Picasso with a restlessness that defied categorisation.
After training at Mumbai's Sir J.J. School of Art, he participated in the Venice Biennale in 1956 before settling eventually in New York, where his work entered the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. Art critic Ranjit Hoskote's description of him as "the missing link in the evolutionary narrative of contemporary art in India" captures something of the problem: Samant's importance is real, but it has never been easy to place.
His presentation in the Edit centres on Samant’s Music &amp; Dance, a series that draws together two preoccupations he sustained throughout his life. Sarangi Nawaz (2002) conjures a solitary musician through spectral, layered paint, a figure that seems to vibrate with the sound of the instrument Samant played throughout his life. Dancing Angels (1988) reaches toward mythology and performance, exemplifying the imaginative range of his later work.

Bhupen Khakhar transformed the trajectory of post-independence Indian art by rejecting many of the established conventions of modern painting in favour of an unapologetically figurative and deeply personal practice. After beginning his career as a chartered accountant, he emerged as one of India's pioneering pop artists, finding inspiration not in abstraction but in the lives of ordinary people. Barbers, tailors, shopkeepers and office workers became the protagonists of his vividly coloured compositions, which drew equally from Indian mythology, popular culture and Western art history to create a distinctive visual language.
The exhibition is centred on a rare presentation of Khakhar's printmaking, a medium he explored extensively from the late 1980s onwards. Working across etching, lithography, serigraphy and relief printing, he translated his narrative sensibility into prints that retained the humour, humanity and immediacy of his paintings. A particular highlight is the complete suite of woodcuts and linocuts produced for Salman Rushdie's Two Stories, featuring illustrations for The Free Radio and The Prophet's Hair.

Zarina occupies a singular place in contemporary printmaking, creating deeply resonant works that fuse geometric precision with reflections on memory, identity and the idea of home. Born in Aligarh in 1937, she embraced abstraction as a visual language, using restrained lines and carefully constructed forms to evoke contemplation rather than narrative. Her practice was shaped by a life spent across Asia, Europe and the United States, while the aesthetics of Islamic architecture and ornament remained a constant source of inspiration.
Her minimalist compositions continue to hold an important place in the history of contemporary printmaking, exploring themes of belonging, migration and place through remarkable economy of form. Among the exhibition's highlights is Tasbih (2012), a marble sculpture inspired by Islamic prayer beads. A recurring symbol in Zarina's work, it reflects her enduring interest in spirituality and material simplicity. Celestial imagery also threads through the exhibition, with Tied to the Sky (2017) and Thirty Birds Flying on the Dark Sky (2017) drawing on stars and constellations to contemplate transcendence, belonging and noor —the Islamic concept of divine light.
Also featured in The South Asia Edit are pioneering Pakistani artists Zahoor ul Akhlaq and Sheherezade Alam, whose works are presented in conversation, pairing Akhlaq's paintings with Alam's ceramics.

Sheherezade Alam founded Pakistan's first independent pottery studio established by a woman, and spent the decades that followed making clear that clay was not a craft material but a sculptural one. Born in 1948 in Lahore , and trained at the National College of Arts there, she drew on the ceramic traditions of the Indus Valley and the wider Islamic world and pushed them somewhere new — vessels that carry the memory of ancestral form while answering to an entirely personal vision. Her method: a deep exploration of form, surface, and proportion.
Thirty-two works from her later practice are gathered in this exhibition: dishes, vases, matka pots, and urali bowls finished with metallic lustres, speckled glazes, and fluted rims that sit at the boundary between function and sculpture. Taken together, they trace a sustained dialogue between innovation and inheritance — one of the most radical bodies of work in contemporary South Asian craft.

Zahoor ul Akhlaq remains an influential figure in South Asian art. Born in 1941 in Delhi, he is an alumnus of Lahore's National College of Arts, subsequently returning to the institution as a teacher. Akhlaq spent nearly three decades teaching at the college, with his artistic trajectory and style guiding his setting up arts education in Pakistan, with the formation of the National College of Arts’ Miniature Painting programme.
The artists who passed through his programme — Rashid Rana, Shahzia Sikander, Imran Qureshi among them — went on to define contemporary Pakistani art internationally. His influence as an educator rivals his considerable achievement as a painter.
That achievement rested on a singular synthesis: Mughal miniature painting, Islamic calligraphy, and vernacular architecture read through the optic of Cubism and Colour Field painting, producing a visual language that challenged the assumptions of both traditions without belonging entirely to either.
The grid recurs throughout his work as both compositional device and conceptual tool — a structure that holds abstraction and representation in productive tension. Radio Photo of Objects Unidentified (1983) and Untitled (1991) anchor his presentation, their layered fragments of image and architecture shifting between legibility and dissolution. They are paintings that reward sustained looking, and resist it at the same time.

For over 280 years, Sotheby's has placed significant works of art before discerning collectors. The South Asian Edit upholds that tradition by turning its attention to six artists whose practices changed the terms on which South Asian modernism is understood. The selling exhibition is on view from 13 July to 7 August 2026 at Sotheby's London flagship on New Bond Street.

Returning to the Portola Hotel and Monterey Conference Center for its 29th year, RM Sotheby's flagship Monterey, California sale has long operated as something beyond a market event. It is the annual convergence point for the world's most serious collectors, the place where rarity and provenance are tested most rigorously and rewarded most handsomely.

The 2026 edition continues that tradition. Among the notable offerings across three auction days this August, three lots stand apart: a Pebble Beach-honoured Aston Martin of breathless rarity, the sole Le Mans competition Teardrop Coupe ever built, and the most extreme variant of Porsche's visionary 1980s supercar. Each tells a story that extends well beyond its specification sheet.

<h2>1962 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato</h2>

To speak of the DB4 GT Zagato is to invoke something close to consensus — a rare thing in a field that prizes individual taste above almost all else. Among the small number of automobiles that have combined genuine competition provenance, extreme rarity, lightweight coachwork of enduring beauty, and the kind of mechanical pedigree that serious collectors demand, the DB4 GT Zagato occupies a position that is essentially uncontested. Only 19 were built. They almost never surface publicly, so when one does, it commands attention.
The car offered here, chassis 0186/R, is the 14th example produced by date of completion, assembled at Newport-Pagnell in December 1961 and dispatched almost immediately to Australia — making it the only DB4 GT Zagato originally sold into Australian ownership. Its first competitive outings were swift and emphatic. In February 1962 at Calder, driven by three-time Australian Grand Prix winner Doug Whiteford, the Zagato won the GT Handicap. A week later at Longford, Whiteford took the GT Scratch and the South Pacific GT Championship, with the car clocked at 145 mph through a flying section in sports car trim. Subsequent outings brought further class wins at hillclimbs and circuit events, before evolving Australian regulations — permitting temporary-roof cars to compete in the GT class — effectively ended the car's racing career before it had suffered any serious consequence. The original Zagato coachwork and matching-numbers engine both survive.
What followed was a comprehensive restoration conducted by Aston Martin specialist Richard Williams in the early 2000s, which included a return of the coachwork to Zagato's own Milan atelier. At completion, the car was shown at the 2002 Louis Vuitton Concours d'Elegance, where it was named Best of Show. Further class awards came at Villa d'Este and Pebble Beach.
The present owner, who acquired the car at RM Sotheby's New York sale in December 2015, subsequently commissioned Kevin Kay Restorations — working in close consultation with independent Aston Martin historian Stephen Archer — for a ten-month bare-metal refinish focused on absolute historical accuracy. The car returned to Pebble Beach in 2019, competed in the special Zagato Centennial Postwar class, and won both its class and The Vitesse — Elegance Trophy. It was one of four finalists for Best of Show, a distinction that requires little elaboration given that a post-war car has won the honour only twice in seven decades. That 0186/R is offered with its matching-numbers engine, predominantly original Zagato coachwork, and a documented history stretching from the 1962 Australian sports car season to the lawns of Pebble Beach renders it, quite simply, among the most significant Aston Martins likely to appear in any auction room this decade.

The Figoni et Falaschi Teardrop coupe is one of those designs that produces a consistent response across generations, cultures, and levels of automotive knowledge: the immediate understanding that something extraordinary has been achieved. The sweeping fenders, the steeply raked screen, the sculpted fastback tail — Giuseppe Figoni's Goutte d'Eau is not so much a product of Art Deco styling as its fullest automotive expression. Eleven examples were built to the so-called "New York" configuration. Only one was built for competition.
Chassis 90117 was commissioned by Philippe Régnier de Massa, a member of one of France's oldest noble families, with a specific purpose: to race at Le Mans. The car's specifications were not merely aesthetic — it sat two inches lower and four inches longer than its siblings, with a reduced frontal area, competition driving lights, additional reinforcement in the engine bay, a long-range fuel tank with external filler cap, and a heart-shaped sunroof to manage ventilation during extended competition use. In June 1939, de Massa and co-driver Norbert-Jean Mahé started the 24 Hours of Le Mans, running as high as ninth before being eliminated on the 88th lap. Ten weeks later, the world was at war.
The car's subsequent history reads as a Cold War artefact as much as an automotive one. By 1942 it had found its way to Germany, stripped of its engine, acquired there by a private owner near Berlin. It remained effectively inaccessible behind the Iron Curtain for nearly five decades, known to Western collectors largely through rumour. When the Wall fell in 1989 it was sold, and eventually acquired by San Diego-based Georg Lingenbrink, who conducted a six-year restoration, correctly identified the car through extensive correspondence with marque authorities, and sourced a correct replacement engine from England. The completed car debuted at Pebble Beach. A later period in the collection of enthusiast Oscar Davis saw further restoration investment and the addition of the Trofeo BMW Group Best of Show at Villa d'Este in 2010, followed by the Louis Vuitton Concours Classic Award in 2011. The present owner has maintained the car in preserved condition since 2022, with recent service by RM Auto Restoration. The sole competition Teardrop in existence, 90117 is a piece of automotive history with few genuine equivalents.

<h2>1989 Porsche 959 Sport</h2>

The Porsche 959 requires no defence as a technological landmark. Intelligent four-wheel drive, adjustable suspension, tire pressure monitoring and composite construction are features considered advanced today, but were standard-issue on this machine when it was introduced in 1986. What is less widely understood is quite how rare the Sport variant is within an already scarce model. Of 292 production 959s built, only 29 were completed to Sport specification: lighter, harder, and more powerful than the standard Komfort car, with a roll cage, racing harnesses, cloth upholstery, and a coilover suspension setup in place of the adaptive system. Output increased to 508 horsepower. Weight fell by 100 kilograms.
The example offered here, chassis 5013, is one of 11 Sports finished in Grand Prix White, and one of only two known to be equipped with air conditioning; an unusual specification on a car from which Porsche had otherwise systematically removed comfort features in the pursuit of reduced mass. Originally invoiced in September 1989, it was delivered to a South Korean collector with a significant 959 holding, before passing to German Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld in 2007. Heidfeld commissioned Porsche Classic in Stuttgart to conduct a thorough mechanical overhaul in 2017, investing nearly 115,000 euro in the car, including a restoration of the Motronic engine management system to its original factory specification. That work was completed in December 2021. The present owner, only the third from new, acquired the car in 2022. It displays 4,788 kilometres from new. The numbers-matching engine, tools, and both German and English manuals accompany the sale, along with a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate. For a car of this rarity and mechanical integrity, scarcely driven and carefully maintained across three owners, the offering is a genuinely unusual one.

It was, by any measure, a road car attempting to forget that it was one. The wooden gear knob was the only surrender to sentiment.

Completed at Leipzig on 25 February 2004 in GT Silver Metallic over Ascot Brown leather, it was delivered to California that spring as one of 644 built to North American specification, a figure accounting for more than half the total production run. Porsche North America replaced the engine, but by August 2006 the car had been reacquired under the applicable Lemon Law and its US title branded accordingly.
It was then returned to the Porsche factory, converted for German road registration, and sold in October 2007 through Porsche AG's Factory Vehicle Sales department to its second owner — a collector who, reportedly sharing a Lamborghini Reventón with the car in his garage, had both repainted in the Reventón's signature matte grey. The current owner acquired it in 2010, since which time it has been driven only occasionally.
In May 2026, the car was dispatched to Porsche AG in Stuttgart for suspension work tied to a prior recall, along with a full service encompassing new tyres and fluids. The intention is to present the car with a fresh TÜV inspection and current German registration. Prospective bidders should note that title documentation may take time to reach them post-sale, and that registration eligibility in their intended country of use warrants careful investigation in advance. This car is not eligible for a Certificate of Conformity, and its history is fully disclosed in the file. This example was delivered in May 1964 through Autohaus Hahn in Stuttgart, finished in Signal Red over Black leather, a palette to which it has been returned during restoration. The accompanying Kardex warranty card details original specification including chrome-plated wheels and an uprated driver's seat, and tracks the car through its early German ownership before it moved to the United States in the late 1980s. A restoration and colour refinish preceded its acquisition by the current vendor in 1994, who arranged for the car to be shipped back to Germany and had the seats professionally refurbished in 2001.
One note of mechanical interest for specialists: the crankcase of the fitted engine appears to be assembled from two units — a type 587/1 crankcase consistent with the 356 C Carrera 2, paired with a type number on the right half more typically associated with the 356 B Carrera 2 GT. Originally published in a Philadelphia newspaper between 1767 and 1768, the essays presented one of the earliest and most persuasive legal arguments defending the rights of British colonists in America.
The work rapidly gained international prominence, appearing in at least eight editions throughout the colonies and Europe within a year of its first appearance. The 288 GTO, the F40 and the F50 arrived as an unambiguous statement from Maranello that the road car could be driven to the very boundary of the possible. When the Enzo made its debut at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, it delivered that same declaration with renewed force: a car conceived around Formula 1 engineering principles, clothed in a body penned by Ken Okuyama at Pininfarina, and propelled by a 6.0-litre V-12 that stands as the last naturally aspirated, non-hybrid V-12 hypercar engine Ferrari has ever made.
Only 399 examples were produced, with the presented example being among the most conscientiously preserved. It is the sole open-bodied example ever constructed on the A6G/54 platform, the prototype for the entire Zagato-bodied series, and the first car to receive the model's twin-cam engine. Originally commissioned by Argentine president Juan Perón, it was exhibited at the 1955 Geneva Salon and the 1956 Paris Salon before returning to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August 2024, where it claimed both its class victory and the Jules Heumann Most Elegant Open Car award, the two highest distinctions available short of Best of Show itself.
The 1950s represented a singular moment in which hand-built coachwork and sculptural design converged at their absolute zenith. It was the decade of the Mercedes-Benz Uhlenhaut Coupé and the ex-Rossellini Ferrari 375 MM. Chassis 2101 belongs in that company without reservation. Its provenance reads accordingly: ordered for a head of state who was overthrown before delivery, displayed twice on the international show circuit, acquired by an American diplomat in Paris, driven to Le Mans in 1959, transported across the Atlantic, and held in storage for roughly three decades, emerging with a remarkable degree of originality still intact.
A thorough 2024 restoration by Fast Cars Ltd of Redondo Beach addressed every element of the chassis, including the first-ever rebuild of the matching-numbers transmission. Marque authority Adolfo Orsi's exhaustive historical report confirms the presence of the matching-numbers engine. The outcome was a car that arrived at Pebble Beach and claimed two of its most celebrated honours. Accompanied by factory production records, build sheet copies, the original owner's manual, and an irreplaceable original tool roll, this is a car for which the phrase "once in a generation" is simply accurate. Completed in February 2023, the Four Seas Commission was conceived around performance, material integrity, and real-world usability in equal measure. At its heart is the 'Motorsports' specification 4.0-litre engine developed in collaboration with Porsche Motorsports North America, featuring a revised crankshaft, Porsche Motorsport oil pump, and refined valve specifications; it is the highest-output engine offered across the entire Classic Services range. Drive reaches all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, with Öhlins adjustable suspension and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes completing the mechanical picture.
Visually, paint-to-sample Nato Green over Singer's carbon fibre bodywork, complemented by nickel-finished bumperettes and RS wheel centres, achieves something quietly and assuredly spectacular. Within, Monument Valley leather, Torre Colombara detailing, carbon fibre bucket seats, a satin mahogany gearshift knob, and early 911 instruments finished in Nato Green with orange needles compose a cabin that is at once period-faithful and thoroughly contemporary. Porsche Classic Navigation with Apple CarPlay ensures that usability was never sacrificed in the pursuit of purity.
Having covered just 250 kilometres since recommissioning and presented in virtually as-delivered condition, the Four Seas Commission offers a rare opportunity to acquire a Singer Classic Services 911 at the very outset of its life as a collector's piece. Estimated at $1,300,000–$1,500,000, it will not remain available for long.

This month, RM Sotheby’s spotlights The Outlaw Collection, a live auction dedicated to the personal cars of Magnus Walker — British-born designer, Los Angeles-based customiser, and the figure widely known as the “Urban Outlaw.” Spanning 162 lots and nearly five decades of Porsche production, the sale charts the evolution of both the marque and one of its most recognisable modern interpreters.
From early short-wheelbase 911s to wide-bodied Turbos and the often-overlooked front-engined cars of the 1980s and 1990s, the collection reflects the breadth of Walker’s taste and the depth of his involvement in Porsche culture. The second drop of lots has now concluded, with the final release having taken place on 3 March 2026.
Walker began collecting Porsches in 1992. Over time, he built not only a significant collection — including 911s, 914s, 928s and 944s — but also a distinct visual identity. His “outlaw” style blends 1970s motorsport cues with purposeful, road-driven performance. Louvered engine lids, lightweight components and visible patina are recurring themes. Having founded Serious Clothing, his background in fashion guides much of his aesthetic sensibility, and his global profile expanded significantly following the 2012 documentary Urban Outlaw. Below, we present three handpicked models that capture different eras of Porsche history through Walker’s legendary collection.

<h2>1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI</h2>

At first glance, this 1976 911 appears to be a relatively standard G-series example. In reality, it is one of the rarest production variants of its period. The Carrera 2.7 MFI is powered by the Type 911/83 engine — the same 210-horsepower, Bosch mechanical fuel-injected flat-six found in the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7. Raw and immediate in delivery, it offers sharper throttle response and a more aggressive induction character than the later CIS-equipped cars that followed.
Between 1974 and 1976, Porsche produced 1,633 Carrera 2.7 MFI coupes. For 1976 — as the model was being phased out in favour of the Carrera 3.0-litre — just 113 final examples were assembled. All were sunroof-delete “slick-top” coupes, all fitted with the RS-spec MFI engine, and all reportedly destined for the German market as homologation “Sondermodells” for a racing series that ultimately never materialised. These cars marked the end of mechanical fuel injection in street-legal 911s; after 1976, MFI was reserved exclusively for competition cars such as the 934 ½, 935 and later 911 SC/RS.
Magnus Walker acquired this example in 2009 after identifying its unusual VIN configuration — including a “9” designation linked to homologation models — and verifying its rarity. It is believed to be the 23rd of the 113 Sondermodells produced. According to its accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, it left the factory finished in Silbermetallic (Z2) over black leatherette, optioned with a radio antenna, front loudspeakers and noise suppression.
Though Walker has added personal touches — including tartan velour bucket seats, a ducktail, Carrera side script and a two-tone hood treatment — the car retains its original numbers-matching engine. Beneath its understated G-series appearance lies one of the final roadgoing examples of Porsche’s race-bred mechanical fuel injection lineage.

<h2>1976 Porsche 911 Turbo</h2>

The European-market 3.0-litre 930 Turbo occupies a special place among early forced-induction 911s. Producing 260 horsepower — compared to the 240 horsepower of US-spec cars — it benefits from a different cam profile while retaining the same 3.0-litre engine and four-speed transmission. The result is a slightly more responsive driving character.
Chassis 9306700216 is a Swiss-delivery, sunroof-delete example finished in Minerva Blue Metallic. As a Euro-specification car, it features the smaller bumper overriders absent from US models, contributing to a cleaner visual profile and marginally increased headroom. Originally delivered with a full white leather interior, it now features blue leather and corduroy seats sourced from Walker’s 1978 911 “78SCHR,” introducing a distinctive textural contrast.
Acquired by Walker in 2013, the car reflects his outlaw philosophy. It rides on deep-dished, Fuchs-inspired wheels developed in collaboration with Fifteen52 — the very first set produced in what became his Outlaw Wheel project. The staggered setup (225/50-15 front, 245/45-15 rear) is wrapped in Hoosier R6 tyres. Combined with a lowered ride height, the stance recalls the race-bred Porsche 934.
A semi-custom “Hooligan” exhaust system by RarlyL8 adds a sharper, more pronounced soundtrack, emphasising turbo spool and overrun. The engine remains numbers-matching, as confirmed by Porsche expert Jürgen Barth. Repainted in a close variation of its original Minerva Blue and finished in gold-bronze with black centres, the car balances collectability with unmistakable personality.
As an early Euro-spec 930 Turbo, it is inherently desirable. In Walker’s hands, it became something more individual — positioned at the intersection of performance and style.

<h2>1966 Porsche 911</h2>

Completed in January 1966 and delivered that spring through Porsche Car Pacific of Burlingame, California, this Irish Green 911 represents one of the earliest short-wheelbase examples in Walker’s collection. Its accompanying Kardex lists “B. Wilson” as the original owner, though no further details are recorded.
Walker acquired the car in 2009 following a brief inspection trip to Seattle. It retains its numbers-matching flat-six engine and is currently fitted with an earlier type 901/0 gearbox (number 100717). The car wears a repaint in its factory-correct Irish Green (Irishgrün) over Black leatherette. The original interior, carpets and wood-rimmed steering wheel show authentic, well-preserved patina.
After purchase, Walker replaced non-period Fuchs wheels with grey-coated steel wheels — run without hubcaps — giving the car a purposeful, understated stance. On narrow 70-series tyres, the driving experience remains tactile and engaging, characterised by body roll and feedback that reflect the 911’s early character.
Unlike many of Walker’s more extensively modified cars, this example remains largely unaltered. It has appeared at select cars and coffee gatherings and featured in a 2013 XCAR video but has otherwise remained a long-term fixture in his garage. In his words, it was never “improved” or “butchered,” retaining precisely the patina and character that first drew him to it.
